Harry E. Johnson, Sr. Merit-Based Scholarship Writing Prompt
Which do you believe is the most important determinant: life circumstances or individual talent? If you deem life circumstances is more important in dictating one’s life outcome, explain why. If you assert that individual talent dictates the outcome to one’s life, support your position. Consider the struggle for racial and socioeconomic equity in the United States when justifying your response.
Need-Based Scholarship Writing Prompt
Millions of businesses and jobs had to adapt to COVID-19 lockdowns and government restrictions over the past three years. Elevated inflation has been driven by supply chain disruptions and pent-up consumer demand for goods following the reopening of the economy. As cost of living rises, many employees are not seeing an increase in livable wages to survive in the United States. There remains a great disparity between head of companies’ annual income and the average employee. How does this example perpetuate wealth inequity in the United States? If given the opportunity, what strategy would you employ that minimizes the wealth gap in America?
HBCU Scholarship Writing Prompt
Institutional endowments among American colleges and universities reflects the wealth inequity in the United States. Colleges and universities with larger institutional endowments often have more resources to provide to their students and faculty. This often translates to a more favorable reputation of the institution. Yet, research in higher education indicates that students who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), regardless of race, fare better in terms of educational outcomes and placement in professions in which traditionally marginalized students are underrepresented. Therefore, do you feel that the knowledge and training at HBCUs (e.g., Prairie View A&M University) compared to the fabled American institutions such as the Ivy Leagues (e.g., Harvard) differs by institution type? If so, is this a justification for the wealth disparity by institution type amidst institution reputation? If not, then explain why there is a gap in institutional funding (e.g., fundraising, federal and state allocation) and reputation among American colleges and Universities, particularly, for those that are HBCUs and those that are Historically White Institutions (HWIs)?
