Music, Photography & Videography - Mother of Divine Mercy Parish
  • Hello!

If you have made your way to this form, then you are getting married at Mother of Divine Mercy Parish (Sweetest Heart of Mary).  I am your music director, and I will be helping you plan and coordinate music & photography/videography!

I know that wedding planning can be a stressful process, so the purpose of this form is hopefully  to keep planning your liturgy as simple as possible. Everything needed to plan a breathtaking program of sacred music can be completed here, all from the comfort of your computer or smartphone!

This first page might be a little overwhelming - don't worry, this will always be available for you to come back and refer to!   Also, the selections you make and information you submit can always be updated or changed until about a week before the wedding (and even then sometimes a last minute inspiration can be included!)

As Director of Music at our parish, I will be at the center of your music planning and also to optionally provide videography services (more on that later) and coordinate with your photographers.    For the "organist" fee of $300 I will provide music that you select on our magnificent pipe organ and also as a professional singer, be able to provide vocal music as well.  All wrapped up in one!   To get this process started, $100 deposit is due at your convenience ($150 if we have agreed upon any musicians not hired by me) with the remainder due one week before the wedding.   Options for that are listed at the bottom of this page, but most use Venmo (@rweiler73).

As stated on our website, please do not hire any musicians before we connect and discuss what you have in mind.  It is important that this be coordinated with me, and I might even have more options for you that may save you $!

Now let's talk a few common topics:

    REHEARSALS:

I do not typically attend your wedding rehearsal unless there is a specific reason to do so.   The rehearsal is for the wedding party and the priest to work with our top notch wedding coordinators.   If there is a reason you would like me at the rehearsal, I do ask for an additional $75 to cover time and gas.

    REPERTOIRE:

The online form will respond accordingly to which liturgy you select (different musical needs depending on your liturgy!)   In some places, suggestions are pre-filled if you don't have any preferences.   These pieces, a mix of traditional and contemporary sacred music, sound amazing on our historic organ and suit the acoustics of our grand space.   Remember, you can always come back and make adjustments up until a week before the wedding!

**coming soon - a link to the structure of the various liturgies)

IF YOU CHOOSE "OTHER" and enter your own title, I will need to be sure it is appropriate for the sacred space.   This is how the list has grown over the years, so if you have a hymn that you love, don't be afraid to put it down!   Just remember that part of what goes with getting married in a 130 year old traditional Catholic church is that the requirements for music are held to, and music that may be allowed in other churches may not be approved for Sweetest Heart of Mary.  I will work with you as best as I can, though, as I completely understand how personal music is and will do what I can to make your vision come true if it's possible!

Most of these pieces are interchangeable, though there are certain combinations of pieces that work particularly well during the procession, as one piece flows nicely into the other (the 3 listed, for example are all in the same key of D!)

We try our best to honor personal requests for favorite hymns, assuming they suit the parameters of acceptable and appropriate music for the Roman liturgy.   Music during the Holy Mass must be sacred,  so pop music, theatrical or film scores are to be avoided.   Here are a few examples of songs that have been requested over the years that are not in keeping with the musical guidelines for the Holy Mass given to us by the Archdiocese of Detroit:

"Bridal Chorus" (from Lohengrin, by Wagner)
    "Hallelujah" (by Leonard Cohen)
"All I Ask of You" (from Phantom of the Opera by Lloyd Webber)
    Music from "Star Wars"
"Can't Help Falling in Love" (and other such contemporary pop music)

    MUSIC FEES:

    DEPOSIT:

    * $100 due to begin planning, and covers coordination with any of the additional musicians you want me to hire on your behalf.

    * $150 if you are requesting, and I approve, bringing in your own musicians (friends, family - must be experienced msuicians).

    ORGANIST/MUSIC DIRECTOR FEE:

    * $300 ($350 on Holiday Weekends), which includes the deposit is due the week before.   This includes all the preparation, communication, and any planning with extra musicians that *I* hire.   This is the preferred and most economical way to go!

    * $300 PLUS a "per guest musician fee" up to $200 for any musicians you wish to bring in that you want me to work with.

example:  You want your friend Mary to sing the Ave Maria at your wedding, and I have determined that they'll be up to the task - the deposit is now $150 and my fee is $350 ($400 on Holiday weekends)

example 3:  You want a trumpet player and a professional soprano.  I hire my best trumpet player and singer.  You pay their fees, but my fee does NOT change ($100 deposit/$300 total)

If you are considering any more than 4 additional musicians, please contact me well ahead of time to discuss this.   This is not something we do usually, but there may be reasons to make exceptions and I am open to the discussion!

The following are optional (none of these affect the organist/music director fee of $300 in any way):

Theresa's fee as Professional Soprano Vocalist (typically $250, but she only charges $200 when I'm her accompanist/organist!)

Schola Wedding Vocal Quartet ($950 - INCLUDES ORGANIST FEE and Theresa's fee)

Trumpet - typically $200, depending on the artist

Violin - typically $275, depending on the artist

String Quartet (includes violin player) - $950, depending on the artist

PAYMENT options (in order of preference):

As mentioned above, a $100/$150 deposit is due at your earliest convenience with the remainder due one week before the wedding, or you may submit the full amount if that is easier.   The deposit is to get the process started and is non refundable if you cancel less than 6 months before the wedding date.   Any musician fees incurred by people I hire may be included in your payment to me and I will ensure proper compensation of your musicians!

    LET'S GET STARTED!!!

  • WEDDING DATE/LITURGY

There are several different liturgies celebrated in our church for the sacrament of marriage. Which one determines what music choices need to be made.

  •  :

  • BASIC INFORMATION

  •  -
  • ADDITIONAL MUSICIANS

  • WE DO NOT ALLOW OUTSIDE ORGANISTS under any circumstances.   We do not allow outside musicians as a general rule.  This is not a judgement on the trustworthiness or ability of other musicians, it merely keeps the number of people that come into contact with our nearly 130 year old organ to an absolute minimum.   I will be your organist (or contact a replacement if necessary).

So here is a little about the musicians available to you for your wedding!

RONALD R. WEILER II,  Director of Music, organist and cantor (baritone)

This is me.  I am an organist, professional singer, and vocal music director of thirty years experience.  Having trained at Interlochen Center for the Arts and Albion College, I have directed such prominent local choirs as Vox Humana of Detroit, the Madrigal Chorale of Southfield, and the Macomb Community Children’s Choir. For the past 25 years, I have served full-time as the Vocal Music director for the 6-12 grade choral program at Detroit Country Day School (and recently retired from teaching!) My choirs there performed throughout the Metro Detroit area and as far afield as Rome and Vienna.  As a church music director, I have served at two suburban parishes in the Archdiocese before joining Mother of Divine Mercy parish in 2014.

THERESA WEILER, cantor and soloist (soprano)

Ms. Weiler is a classically trained professional soprano, proficient in both traditional and contemporary styles. After receiving training in Washington, D.C. and the College of William and Mary, Ms. Weiler moved to the Detroit Area, where she was a member and featured soloist with the Madrigal Chorale of Southfield for several years before leaving to focus on sacred music. Ms. Weiler has performed as a soloist and section leader in churches throughout the metro area, including the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Sweetest Heart of Mary Church for countless weddings.   Samples of her incredible work are available later in this form.

    SCHOLA QUARTET WEDDING CHOIR:

The Schola Quartet features married couples Ronald and Theresa Weiler (baritone, soprano) and Stephen and Lisa Rahrig (tenor, alto). This group has been singing together for the past four years, and has developed a repertoire of traditional and contemporary sacred music perfectly suited to our grand and resonant space. With their rich harmonies and dexterous polyphony, the Schola Quartet can provide the soulfulness of a full choir with the intimacy of only four voices.

    INSTRUMENTALISTS (TRUMPET/VIOLIN MOST EFFECTIVE!):

Due to the particularities of our historic parish, plus the space limitations of our choice loft, we limit instrumentalists in the choir loft to a few seasoned professionals familiar with our community.  Please let me assist in hiring any additional musicians you may be interested in.   I can consolidate the payments and since I have contacts with some of the best musicians in the area, the results will be superb.   Typical additional instruments include trumpet and/or violin.   Some also chooce to have a String Quartet play before the wedding as their guests arrive.

    FRIENDS and FAMILY:

If you have a particular person in mind (i.e., a friend or relative) I will need to know more about them and understand their skill level before we make that decision!   More often than not, we can make this work so please ask!   We do insist that all participating musicians be experienced and know the repertoire ahead of time.   Our church is a very challenging environment, even for the professionals, so musicians must be experienced and if you have someone in mind, I will ask for their credentials and experience.   If they are acceptable, I do charge an additional $50 additional fee per musician (up to 4) for the extra time in coordinating those folks into the liturgical music plan.

Ultimately, if you want additional musicians, I highly encourage you to let me do the hiring.  Please do not hire anyone until you have connected with me and we can discuss what you have in mind.   We have people that are extremely familiar with performing in our church, which will ensure the best possible outcome for you, potentially with some cost savings as well!   The most common request is to have a professional soprano (especially for the "Ave Maria" if presenting flowers to the Blessed Mother).   I was recently sent this message to share with you by a bride married in our church not too long ago...

“My husband and I got married at Sweetest Heart of Mary this past October and had the pleasure of Ron, Theresa, and Hektor (violin) for our music services. We decided to opt-in for the addition of the Soprano last minute due to our music choices, and we had faith and trust that Theresa would be great. Well - that is an understatement. The combination of Ron, Hektor, and Theresa’s voice was so incredible it brought my wedding guest to tears! We could not have imagined such a beautiful wedding ceremony; it superseded my dreams and what I envisioned. Ron’s responsiveness and organization made it so easy and seamless. We could not recommend them more and we look back on our ceremony with immense gratitude for all three of them. Thank you all! - The Pearsons”--

"You and Theresa were AMAZING!! I can’t tell you how many people cried during the ceremony and said just how beautiful it was. One of our groomsmen cried and said he’s never cried at a wedding, not even his own! Theresa literally has the voice of an angel. Thank you so much for making the day perfect and for everything that went into the backend. We appreciate you and the church so much!" - Michelle Day--

"The Ceremony was BEAUTIFUL and the highlight of the day for Bailey and I for sure. The ceremony would not have been the same without Theresa.   Her singing made it truly magical" - Allison Biskup--

  • SCHOLA VOCAL QUARTET

For full Masses, we have a professional Schola Cantorum Quartet with an extensive sacred repertoire.   If you check below I can send you additional information!

  • ADDITIONAL INSTRUMNENTALISTS

While the incredible Austin Opus 2 organ at Sweetest Heart of Mary (and the state of the art Viscount organ at St. Josaphat) can provide you the transcendent experience one would expect from getting married in our parish, some may still wish to bring in additional instrumentalists.   I have connections and professional relationships with some of the absolute best musicians in the Metro area, and I am happy to make these arrangements for you!

  • PROCESSION & RECESSION MUSIC

No matter the form of you wedding, the following music is part of the ceremony! Suggested music is pre-selected if you have no particular preferences, but of course you may make any changes you wish! if you want a piece that is not listed, please check with me first just to be sure it’s OK. That is how this list has evolved over time, so don’t be afraid to ask! (FYI, “Here Comes the Bride” is not on this list, and is not used for weddings in our church.)

  • We are in the process of making recordings of the song choices that are available for your wedding.   If you see an asterisk below =  that means a recording of a recent "performance" of that selection in the church is clickable there!   If not just search on YouTube for "piece name" and "organ" and you'll find something close!

  • We have begun recording all of the music options you have to pick from!   Below is a list of the music you will see in the selection boxes below.  If you see a hyperlink, it means that it has a link to a simple YouTube video of the church with the music as we would sing it/play it for your wedding.   Note these provide wonderful vocal samples of our soprano, Theresa Weiler, one of the best wedding cantors around, to help you decide if you'd like to hire her as well.

  • UNITY CANDLE

There is no "special" music for this moment in the ceremony - it merely extends the service, and leave the couple and all in attendance waiting awkwardly for a song to end! However, I do like to play some subtle background music, so I like to know if this is happening ahead of time!
  • FLOWERS to the BLESSED MOTHER

It has become a custom in the Catholic and Eastern Rite churches to take a moment just before the conclusion of the wedding to ask for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to invite her into your lives, and ask for her blessing on your marriage. The couple prepares a bouquet of flowers, and lays it at the feet of our beautiful statue of Mary. It is not a required part of the Liturgy, but especially in the churches of "Mother of Divine Mercy" this can be a meaningful addition. It is also a very nice moment of quiet for the two of you just before the wedding ends and the excitement of the remainder of the day gets underway!

  • Videography/Live Streaming

In house offered by www.weilercreativemedia.com (WCM)
  • The church has in house videography and live streaming options. You will get the best video/stream from me as I have filmed hundreds of weddings in the church and know just how to get the best view of every special moment in your wedding!  Up to 16 of our 4k cameras are remotely operated, so your guests will get the best experience and be able to see and cherish your wedding without obstruction!  The church does have limitations as to where we allow vendors and their equipment to go in our sacred space, all of which is covered by our remote system, so please consider a full ceremony video as a great compliment to your videographers "all day highlight" video.  Any video can be secured for a $200 deposit, with the remaining due upon delivery of your video!

You might also be able to SAVE some money and simply leave the filming of your actual wedding video to us and have your videographer focus on the "before and after" special events of the day.  We will have everything set and ready to go in the church well before the ceremony begins, and there are NO personnel on the church floor to disrupt your guests from experiencing your special moments!
