    Music, Photography & Videography - Mother of Divine Mercy Parish

  • Hello!

    If you have made your way to this form, then you are getting married at Mother of Divine Mercy Parish (Sweetest Heart of Mary).  I am your music director, and I will be helping you plan and coordinate music & photography/videography! 

    I know that wedding planning can be a stressful process, so the purpose of this form is hopefully  to keep planning your liturgy as simple as possible. Everything needed to plan a breathtaking program of sacred music can be completed here, all from the comfort of your computer or smartphone! 

    Please send me your first draft as early as possible—even if some selections are tentative! If you already know what you want, you can complete everything now. You can return to your existing submission as your plans develop. Please finalize your music selections and notify me of any changes at least two weeks before your wedding. Your music balance is also due two weeks before the wedding. Requests for musical changes after this deadline may sometimes be accommodated, but must be confirmed with me and cannot be guaranteed.

    As Director of Music at our parish, I will be at the center of your music planning and also to optionally provide videography services (more on that later) and coordinate with your photographers.    For the "organist" fee of $350 I will provide music that you select on our magnificent pipe organ and also as a professional singer, be able to provide vocal music as well.  All wrapped up in one!   Star String Quartet requires a $250 reservation deposit, which is credited toward your total. When you make your selections, I will send you an invoice.  It will say it's coming from "Weiler Creative Media" which is my piano/media business.   It will list your selections along with the prices.   This does not mean that these are set in stone, it's just a way for me to keep track of everything for you and to give you documentation.   No advance payment is required for my music services. If you are able, a down payment of $100 is appreciated to help spread out the cost; it is credited toward your music balance.   You will be able to pay via credit card through the invoice directly, but you can also avoid the credit card surcharge Square adds by paying directly through Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle.  Information is on the form.

    ***IMPORTANT - DO NOT INCLUDE any music fees, including the Organist Fee, with the payment to the church.  You will be able to pay me directly, and include the amount for all the musicians that will be playing/singing for you!   I'm happy to offer that convenience!

    As stated on our website, please do not hire any musicians before we connect.   

    Now let's talk about a few common topics:

    REHEARSALS:

    I do not attend wedding rehearsals.   The rehearsal is for the wedding party and the priest to work with our top-notch wedding coordinators.  Keep in mind, music rehearsal cannot be a part of your wedding rehearsal at the church - by request of the volunteer coordinators in charge of making sure the rehearsal covers all it needs to so that you are ready for your wedding!

    REPERTOIRE:

    The online form will respond accordingly to which liturgy you select (different musical needs depending on your liturgy!)   In some places, suggestions are pre-filled if you don't have any preferences.   These pieces, a mix of traditional and contemporary sacred music, sound amazing on our historic organ and suit the acoustics of our grand space.   Please finalize your music selections and notify me of any changes at least two weeks before your wedding. Your music balance is also due two weeks before the wedding.

     IF YOU CHOOSE "OTHER" and enter your own title, be aware that there may be a $50 surcharge.  I will need to be sure it is appropriate for the sacred space, of course, but also, if approved, I will have to determine the time it will take for me to prepare it.  There would be extra practice time involved, or even purchase of scores (sheet music).   It may be something that is already in my repertoire, in which case I wouldn't charge extra, I would probably just add it to the list!  This is how the list has grown over the years, so if you have a hymn that you love, or a particular piece of "classical" style music, don't be afraid to put it down!   Just remember that part of what goes with getting married in a 130-year-old traditional Catholic church is that the requirements for music are held to, and music that may even be allowed in other churches may not be approved for Sweetest Heart of Mary.  I will work with you as best as I can, though, as I completely understand how personal music is and will do what I can to make your vision come true if it's possible! 

    Most of these pieces are interchangeable, though there are certain combinations of pieces that work particularly well during the procession, as one piece flows nicely into the other (the 3 listed, for example are all in the same key of D!)

    We try our best to honor personal requests for favorite hymns, assuming they suit the parameters of acceptable and appropriate music for the Catholic Liturgy.   Music associated with the Holy Mass, or any liturgy in the church, must be sacred.  Pop music, theatrical or film scores are to be avoided, and cannot be approved for use for weddings.   Here are a few examples of songs that have been requested over the years that are not in keeping with the musical guidelines for the Holy Mass given to us by the Archdiocese of Detroit:

    MUSICIAN OPTIONS AND FEES:

    You will be given first some options for your "core" music team.  This is various combinations of Organist, singer and violin, the most common requests for music in the church!   Then there will be some options for special additions to the team to make it even more spectacular!   Part of getting married at Sweetest Heart of Mary is having access to the professional musicians that provide the music at the parish.   Take advantage of this opportunity, this is really one of the best ways to enhance the experience for everyone that attends your wedding!

    Options for the "core" team:

    • Organist and Singer - $600
    • Organist, Singer & Violin - $900
    • Organist and Violin (organist will sing as required by the liturgy) - $650
    • Organist only (organist will sing as required by the liturgy) - $350

     

    OPTIONAL EXTRAS:

     

    Schola Wedding Vocal Quartet (Choose "core team" options A or B, and add $400 to bring in the additional singers!)

     

    Trumpet - (can be added to any core team for an additional $200)

      

    Star String Quartet — add $600 to a core team that already includes violin. A $250 reservation deposit is required and is credited toward your total.

     

    PAYMENT options.   I will send you an invoice for your choices when you submit your form, but this is only for your records, and to provide as many means of payment as possible.   There is a surcharge for paying the invoice directly with a credit card, but it is available!   The easiest way is to just Venmo me!   I would greatly appreciate a $150 "down payment" to get things started - this is particularly helpful to get my family through the seasons where there are no weddings at the church!  It is not required, of course.   The form will ask you for your preferred method of payment so I can know where to look!

  • WE DO NOT ALLOW OUTSIDE ORGANISTS under any circumstances, and guest musicians are on approval.   This is not a judgement on the trustworthiness or ability of other musicians; it merely keeps the number of people that come into contact with our nearly 130-year-old organ to an absolute minimum.   I will be your organist (or contact a replacement if necessary).   In addition, we have a team of seasoned musicians that regularly provide music at our Masses and weddings throughout the year.   Let me help you put together the best music for your wedding!

    So here is a little about the musicians that comprise the team at Sweetest Heart of Mary!

     

    THE CORE TEAM:


    RONALD R. WEILER II    ,  Director of Music - Wedding Music Coordinator, organist and vocalist (baritone)

    This is me.  I am an organist, professional singer, and vocal music director of thirty years of experience.  Having trained at Interlochen Center for the Arts and Albion College, I have directed and/or served as collaborative keyboardist for such prominent local choirs as Vox Humana of Detroit, the Madrigal Chorale of Southfield, and the Macomb Community Children’s Choir. For 25 years (1998-2023), I served full-time as the Vocal Music director for the 6-12 grade choral program at Detroit Country Day School.   My choirs there performed throughout the Metro Detroit area and as far afield as Rome and Vienna.  As a church music director, I have served at two suburban parishes in the Archdiocese before joining Mother of Divine Mercy parish in 2014.  I have coordinated nearly 1,000 weddings at Sweetest Heart of Mary over the last 12+ years!  

     

    THERESA WEILER, cantor and vocalist (soprano)

    Ms. Weiler is a classically trained professional soprano, proficient in both traditional and contemporary styles. After receiving training in Washington, D.C. and the College of William and Mary, Ms. Weiler moved to the Detroit Area, where she was a member and featured soloist with the Madrigal Chorale of Southfield for several years before leaving to focus on sacred music. Ms. Weiler has performed as a soloist and section leader in churches throughout the metro area, including the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Sweetest Heart of Mary Church for countless weddings.   Samples of her incredible work are available later in this form.   

    HEKTOR QYTETI, Violin:

    Hektor has played for weddings at Sweetest Heart of Mary for over a decade.   He is a prominent player and orchestra conductor in the Metro Detroit area, and is widely considered by the music community as one of the best.   His musical style and his mastery of the trumpet are uniquely suited to the acoustics at Sweetest Heart of Mary.   He can bring a majestic fanfare to life, or add a sweet and lyrical line to just about any piece chosen for your wedding!

    SCHOLA QUARTET WEDDING CHOIR:

    The Schola Quartet features married at Sweetest Heart of Mary couples Ronald and Theresa Weiler (baritone, soprano) and Stephen and Lisa Rahrig (tenor, alto). This group has been singing together for over a decade, and has developed a repertoire of traditional and contemporary sacred music perfectly suited to our grand and resonant space. With their rich harmonies and dexterous polyphony, the Schola Quartet can provide the soulfulness of a full choir with the intimacy of only four voices. 



    PAUL ROACHE, Trumpet

    Paul is considered by the music community as the best trumpet player in the area.  His musical style and his mastery of the trumpet are uniquely suited to the acoustics at Sweetest Heart of Mary.   He can bring a majestic fanfare to life, or add a sweet and lyrical line to just about any piece chosen for your wedding!

     

    STAR STRING QUARTET:

    Star String Quartet — add $600 to a core team that already includes violin. A $250 reservation deposit is required and is credited toward your total.

    One of the most prominent string organizations in the Metro Detroit area, led by our violin player, Mr. Qyteti, Star Quartet can be an incredible addition to the experience for your wedding.  They will play prelude music as your guests arrive, and usually we choose to feature them during your wedding procession as well.   During the Mass some of the players will come to the loft and join the Mass music as appropriate!

     

    Advice on friends and family:

    Many of us have those in our lives that have musical experience.  Though it is tempting to want to have them involved, I highly encourage everyone to let those important people be guests at your wedding, and not be asked to perform.  Our church is a very challenging environment, even for the professionals, and we want the day to be a positive experience for everyone!  When you get married at Sweetest Heart of Mary, you want to have those professionals who know the space provide your music!   If you really want to bring someone in, I will ask for their musical credentials and professional experience.   If they are acceptable, I do charge an additional $50 fee per musician (up to 4) for the extra time in coordinating those folks into the music plan.  They would be welcome to sing a prelude, or one or more of the hymns during the Mass.   Mass parts (Gloria/Psalm/Gospel Acclamation/Sanctus/Memorial Acclamation/Great Amen/Lamb of God) are not available for friend/family musicians.

    There is no "special" music for this moment in the ceremony - it merely extends the service, and leave the couple and all in attendance waiting awkwardly for a song to end! However, I do like to play some subtle background music, so I like to know if this is happening ahead of time!

  • FLOWERS to the BLESSED MOTHER

    It has become a custom in the Catholic and Eastern Rite churches to take a moment just before the conclusion of the wedding to ask for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to invite her into your lives, and ask for her blessing on your marriage. The couple prepares a bouquet of flowers, and lays it at the feet of our beautiful statue of Mary. It is not a required part of the Liturgy, but especially in the churches of "Mother of Divine Mercy" this can be a meaningful addition. It is also a very nice moment of quiet for the two of you just before the wedding ends and the excitement of the remainder of the day gets underway!

  • Sweetest Heart of Mary is one of the most beautiful churches in the state! We have had many photographers visit our church to photograph weddings over the years. If you are still looking for a photographer, we would like to recommend a few that we have had positive experiences with and have done a superb job balancing the best photos possible, with the reverence for the church and the ability for guests to be able to see you as you take your vows!

    If you have already chosen a photographer, that is of course fine!   We would like to be able to coordinate with them ahead of time to be sure they are up to speed on the guidelines for photography in our sacred space!   It alleviates stress on the big day for everyone!

  • The church has in-house videography and live streaming options. You will get the best video/stream from me as I have filmed hundreds of weddings in the church and know just how to get the best view of every special moment in your wedding!  Up to 16 of our 4K cameras are remotely operated, so your guests will get the best experience and be able to see and cherish your wedding without obstruction!  The church does have limitations as to where we allow vendors and their equipment to go in our sacred space, all of which is covered by our remote system, so please consider a full ceremony video as a great complement to your videographer's "all day highlight" video.  A $100 non-refundable video reservation deposit is due two weeks before your wedding, along with your music balance. The remaining video balance is due upon delivery of your video.

    You might also be able to SAVE some money and simply leave the filming of your actual wedding video to us and have your videographer focus on the "before and after" special events of the day.  We will have everything set and ready to go in the church well before the ceremony begins, and there are NO personnel on the church floor to disrupt your guests from experiencing your special moments!

    I have been married for 25 years, and I still watch my video on occasion.   Even if you have someone making a "wedding day" video, for the relatively small cost of this video, dedicated to filming the Mass in a "Pro Shot" cinematic fashion, having a dedicated video of your wedding in the church is an investment you'll be glad you made for years to come!

    If you would like to LIVE STREAM your wedding, that payment is due in advance.   Once that $249 is received you will receive a Private/Unlisted YouTube link which you can send to as many people as you want!   This is a great way to include family and friends that are unable to travel to Detroit to celebrate your day with you in person.   They'll have the best "seats" in the house!   The livestream stays available for 24 hours. If you also purchase a Full Ceremony Video, all the footage captured by the livestream cameras is then re-edited to capture ALL the wonderful moments, and you receive $100 off the Full Ceremony Video price.   It's a great bundle!
