  • Job Readiness Class is similar to Smart Work Ethics but has a decided focus on practical skills for getting a job. This class is administered by utilizing PowerPoint presentations, Handouts, and exams. Instructors conduct mock interviews with students and provide feedback to help improve communication and interview skills.

  • Materials Needed –

    • Separate handouts for students and instructors
    • PowerPoint presentations for the first seven lessons
    • Interview question handouts for student practice
    • Student exam 
    • Projector and laptop or desktop computer
  • Summary of Included Lessons:

    1. Job-Related Behavior
      The lesson begins with a short true or false questionnaire about workplace behaviors. Instructors will then provide correct answers and students will have the opportunity to ask questions. Students will also learn how to answer two of the most important job interview questions, “Tell me about yourself,” and “what are your strengths and weaknesses.”
    2. Attitude Check
      Students will learn how attitude can affect their behavior at work and how it will affect others. The class will be split into groups to discuss sample situations and come up with solutions. 
    3. Appearance and Hygiene in the Workplace
      Students will learn about the importance of a professional appearance in the workplace. They will receive a guide that includes information on good personal hygiene practice. Students will also learn about company dress codes and styles of dress for work.
    4. Personal Responsibility
      Students will learn about the importance of being responsible and accountable in the workplace. Students will learn ways of coping with criticism in the workplace and will work with a partner to decide how to handle several different workplace scenarios. 
    5. Positive Self-Image and Attitude
      Students will learn about the importance of a positive self-image, and the difference between arrogance and confidence. Self-talk is defined and discussed, and students will take a positive attitude self-test.
    6. Boundaries and Social Media
      Boundaries are defined and discussed. Students will learn why boundaries are important, how to maintain healthy boundaries in the workplace, and also five rules for social media and the workplace.
    7. Getting the Job
      The focus of this session is the steps to obtaining a job. Students will learn the application process, common interview questions, and fill out a sample application.
    8. Interview Practice
      Common interview questions will be discussed and students will be split into pairs or groups to interview each other. Instructors will review questions for the class exam.
    9. Mock Interviews and Exam
      Instructors will complete a short mock interview with each student. Students will also be given a 10 question course exam.
