  • More than ever, in today’s workplace communication, is essential for success. Utilizing some of the same information from Independent Living Skills, this class covers essential topics related to developing better communication skills at home and in the workplace. Students will learn the difference between social activities and social skills, as well as the importance of good listening skills and how to present themselves on Social Media.

  • Materials Needed –

    • Separate handouts for students and instructors
    • PowerPoint presentations
    • Blank paper – one sheet per student – for Session 2
    • Projector and laptop or desktop computer
  • Summary of Included Lessons

    1. Social Interaction Part 1: What are Social Skills?
      Students will learn the difference between social activity, a social skill, and the benefit of social interaction. Students will complete a checklist of social activities they already engage in, a self-assessment of their social skills, and a checklist of the benefits they receive from social interaction. 
    2. Social Interaction – pt. 2
      Students will learn about the communication loop, the importance of listening skills in good communication, and participate in activities to test their listening and communication skills.
    3. Self-Advocacy
      Students will learn about using assertiveness skills to advocate for themselves. 
    4. Appearance and Hygiene
      Students will learn the skills necessary to make a good first impression at school or work – good communication, good personal hygiene, and appropriate clothing for the situation. 
    5. Conflict and Compromise
      Students will learn positive steps for conflict resolution and practice these steps with classmates in various scenarios.
    6. Managing Emotions
      Students will discuss and learn new coping skills to help them manage their emotions in stressful situations. 
    7. Personal Responsibility
      Students will learn key points about being responsible in their jobs, how to handle criticism, and steps to giving constructive criticism. They will also practice scenarios with a partner, in which they must give constructive criticism to a co-worker using the steps provided.
    8. Boundaries and Social Media
      Students will learn the importance of healthy boundaries, and learn how to apply those guidelines in relationships and their use of social media.
