    Syllabus
  • This class is for students who would benefit from additional emphasis on life skills such as hygiene, self-advocacy, managing emotions, and personal boundaries. Instructors utilize class handouts, powerpoints and experiential exercises to teach new concepts and refresh old ideas. Students will leave will healthy lifestyle skills and feeling more confident. 

  • Materials Needed –

    • Separate handouts for students and instructors
    • PowerPoint presentations
    • Projector and laptop or desktop computer
  • Summary of Included Lessons:

    1. First Impressions
      Students will learn the skills necessary to make a positive first impression at school or in the workplace. They will also learn the necessary components of good personal hygiene, clothing that is appropriate for the season and practice professionally introducing themselves.
    2. Healthy Lifestyle
      Students will learn and discuss the benefits of good sleep habits, a well-balanced diet, and staying physically active. Posters of food groups will be used for an informal quiz at the end of class.
    3. Self-Advocacy
      Students will learn how to advocate for themselves at school or in the workplace. They will complete a checklist of their Strengths, Skills, and Challenges, and understand the concept of a support system. Each student will also fill out a diagram of his or her own support system. 
    4. Assertiveness
      Assertiveness is defined, and students will learn three separate types of assertive behavior. Different scenarios will be discussed, in which students will need to utilize these behaviors. Using their knowledge of assertiveness, each student will complete the provided “I statements.”
    5. Making Money
      Students will identify sources of income, types of bank accounts and learn how to use a check and a deposit slip. Students will also learn what the current minimum wage is, and how to calculate their gross income in a job.
    6. Spending Basics
      Students will learn the benefits of managing their income, as well as how to plan and make adjustments to a basic budget.
    7. Time Management
      Students will learn new time management strategies, and discuss the importance of good time management skills. This will begin with the Be On-Time Checklist, a strategy that can be easily implemented at home. 
    8. Making Decisions and Solving Problems
      Students will learn the steps involved in making good decisions and work together with their classmates to solve various problems.
