  •  Houston Asian American Archive (HAAA) Oral History Project

The Houston Asian American Archive (HAAA) of Rice University was established in 2010. Our mission is to explore the varied experiences of Asians and Asian Americans in the Houston community, and to understand both the challenges they have faced and the contributions they have made. We aim to capture all generations from all walks of life in order to create an inclusive portrayal of the Houston Asian and Asian American community. We intend this project to provide a documentary history linking these life stories to larger national, regional, and global narratives.

The HAAA interviewers will ask the participants questions related to the latter's work and life experiences. Prior to the interview, the interviewer will request a CV, and search online or in existing HAAA materials for background information, if any, of the interviewee. The interview normally lasts about 60 to 90 minutes. The interviews are generally documented via audio and/or video recordings. The interviewers will transcribe the interviews and upload them onto the HAAA and Rice University Digital Scholarship websites. Both the audio and/or video recordings are available online to researchers from all over the world free of charge. Donated artifacts such as photographs, newspapers, papers, and other mementos, are cataloged and housed in the Woodson Research Center of Rice University. They are available for viewing upon request.

If the interviewee wishes to halt the process at any time, there is no negative repercussion. At the same time, if recalling the past proves to be a painful and disturbing exercise, there is a national Crisis Call Center that the interviewee can access, at 1-800-273-8255.
