Purpose:

The Joseph Mitchell First Responder Scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to students seeking a career as a First Responder or First Responders who are seeking to further their education in their career field. Applicants must meet the criteria below and will be enrolling or are currently enrolled in a qualifying program of study for emergency responder vocational career training.

Eligibility Requirements:
- 18 years or older
- Obtained HS diploma or GED
- Complete the application process and submission by December 23, 2023
- Start program by January 31, 2024
- Provide proof of enrollment of qualifying program in the state of Texas
Scholarship Award:

Applicants chosen to receive the award in the amount of $500 will be notified via email. All complete applications submitted will be reviewed by the Joseph Mitchell First Responder Scholarship Committee who will make the final decision on scholarship recipent(s).

Applications will be accepted no later than December 23, 2023. Incomplete or falsified applications will be rejected. Failure to respond to notification of award by Jauary 31, 2024 will result in forfeiture of all scholarship funds.

More than 80 percent of first responders experience traumatic events on the job. Due to challenging and dangerous situations, first responders are at a high risk of developing PTSD as a work-related injury or condition. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), roughly 1 in 3 first responders develop PTSD. In comparison, the incidence of PTSD in the general population is 1 in 5 people.
