Morning Session: URADIO with Denise Jones
URadio is about capturing and creating stories that matter --- to You! In this STEAM program, you will be guided in learning how to create stories for radio or podcast. Over the week, students will build skills in audio journalism, arts and media by telling a story with ambient sound, doing a vox pop interview, and creating a commentary piece with an infographic, while learning audio editing basics with Audacity. URadio is your ideas and training to help you tell your stories! This week’s project will focus on themes of education as an important factor in individual and community outcomes. URadio will culminate in a special airing of campers stories on Takoma Radio LPFM 89.3!
Afternoon Session: Uke Flow with Munit Mesfin
During our time together, we will work to master the 4 to 5 chords (more if we learn them fast) on the ukulele and some of the most common chord progressions used in writing the simplest to the most complex songs. The songwriters and ukulele players-in-training will choose from a selection of songs that they want to learn as a basis of our lessons, and then, once we have the skills under our belt, we will venture to write new songs or chants around positive social change, our well being, and building healthy communities. This will be a collaborative experience with some teaching and singing and co-creating until we feel comfortable to flow with the ukulele and start making our own masterpieces. This workshop will focus on themes of social justice, health care and resilience, both at the systemic and personal levels.
