StoCo Youth Leader Expectations
About Stockton Covenant Church (StoCo)
Stockton Covenant Church is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church (covchurch.org). While you do not have to be a member of an Evangelical Covenant Church or Stockton Covenant Church to volunteer with us, we do ask that you respect our common values and affirmations. Our six common affirmations are as follows:
The Centrality of the Word of God
We consider the Bible (Old and New Testaments) as the Word of God and the only perfect rule for faith, doctrine and conduct.
The Necessity of the New Birth
We affirms that new, abundant life is only found in Jesus’ life and work. As a broken people, we are made new in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
A Commitment to the Whole Mission of the Church
We not only encourage people to develop a right relationship with God, we also strive to develop a more just and more compassionate world.
The Church as a Fellowship of Believers
We acknowledge and embrace that everyone who follows Jesus is part of His Church. As a local church we strive to listen to and obey Jesus.
A Conscious Dependence on the Holy Spirit
We encourage, equip and empower each other to seek the daily guidance of the Holy Spirit and realize His power in our lives.
The Reality of Freedom in Christ
We understand that there are differences in opinion in lesser issues and we strive not to let differences divide and diminish our lives. Instead we see the pursuit of Christ as a liberating and healthy journey in life.
Character Expectations:
As leaders of students, we are in a position of great influence. We must uphold the high standards to lead students well.
- No underage drinking/smoking or consumption of illegal drugs.
- Living lives of sexual purity - sexual abstinence outside of marriage, faithfulness in marriage.
- Abide to the Agreement of Accountability Regarding Relationships (see below).
- Treat students and other leaders with love and respect.
- Be teachable regarding correction and direction of team leaders.
Relationship Values and Expectations:
Do not have exclusive, secretive, or intimate relationships with students, especially on the phone and internet. We don't want emotional attachment to occur that could be a set-up for other inappropriate intimacy. Avoid the “only I can help this person” mindset because it can lead to trouble. We do not permit dating relationships between student leaders, and younger students they are leading.
Do not be alone in a non-public place with students. Because non-public places lack accountability, this is a high risk situation.
If you find a student creating an inappropriate affection for you or you struggle in this area, please talk to Haley so adjustments can be made to protect your (and our) reputation.
Agreement of Accountability Regarding Relationships
I agree to the following standards of behavior while I am a youth leader:
- I have read and understand the “Relationship Values and Expectations” above.
- I will not allow myself to become inappropriately emotionally attached to a student.
- I will not be alone with students in a non-public place.
- I will submit to the warnings of fellow team members regarding my behavior in relationships.
