  • Farm Rules and Safety

Please be aware that visiting a working farm has inherent risks. Your safety and enjoyment is our number one concern so please read the section on farm rules and safety you can access by clicking the bar below. After reading the rules and agreement, please read and sign the waiver below:

    • Farm Rules and Safety
    • These rules are intended to provide a safe environment for our guests. For your safety and enjoyment of the farm we expect our guests to follow them.  If children under the age of 18 are staying with you, you are responsible for making sure that your children follow these rules and stay safe. Children must be accompanied by the adult(s) who signs the liability release at all times while on the farm. If you have questions or concerns, please ask a farm representative.

      1. Please read any posted signs. They are there for your safety.

      2. Please stay out of areas we have marked as unsafe for visitors. Never open any gates or enter any animal pens without being accompanied by a farm owner or employee.

      3. Please stay out of our farm buildings and away from our personal residences unless you are given permission by a farm representative.

      4. Do not get on, touch, or climb on our tractors, farm implements, vehicles or other equipment unless a farm representative gives you permission. Even then, be careful.

      5. Do not climb stairs or ladders in the barns. The barn lofts are off limits to guests.

      6. Do not tamper with or attempt to use the zip line without assistance from employees of Heritage Farm.

      7. Please wear appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes for a more enjoyable and safe visit to the farm. Because of the rocky bottom, we recommend old sneakers or water shoes when wading in the creek. Shoes will also prevent leeches from attaching to your feet.  Leeches live in the creek bottom and are harmless, but they can be alarming to children!

      8. While visiting the animal areas, please approach these areas slowly and quietly. Loud noises and sudden movements can startle animals. Spooked animals might act unpredictably and/or get out of their pens, which is dangerous for visitors and for the animals. The chickens are especially easy to spook, so please be extra calm around the chicken pens.

      9. Do not feed any animals without being accompanied by a farm representative.

      10. DO NOT TOUCH OUR WHITE MESH FENCES! These fences are ELECTRIFIED and will deliver a jolting shock if touched.  Electric fences help keep the animals in and predators out.  The electricity to the fences is sometimes turned off during the day, but you should always assume that the electricity is on until a farm representative tells you otherwise. PLEASE WARN YOUR CHILDREN TO NOT TOUCH THESE FENCES!

      11. Do not get into the pens with the animals or reach into animal pens unless accompanied by a farm representative! Our animals are farm animals not pets, and our farm is not a petting zoo.

      12. Remember, this is an actual farm!  Expect uneven ground and possibly sticks, small holes or other debris that you could trip over. Even when it has not rained recently, the ground can get wet and muddy from watering plants and animals, which can make the ground slippery and cause falls. Please, don’t run and please be careful while you are walking around the farm.

      13. Our farm consists of woodlands, grasslands, crop fields, and a creek. Small wild animals and insects make their home here as well. If you see a wild animal, stay away from it or calmly walk away if it is already near you. You may also encounter poison ivy and other poisonous plants, so please take appropriate precautions. Know how to identify poison ivy and avoid touching it!

Heritage Farm is our family business and our home. Please respect our work, privacy and rules so that we can continue to open our farm to you. We hope your visit to our farm is a fun and memorable experience. Our expectation is that you and your family get to encounter new things, experience nature, and see a more ecological and regenerative way of raising food and fiber. When you leave, we hope you have a better understanding of what goes on in the agriculture community.
