    Intern UK Sponsorship Programme
  • Thank you for applying to host an international intern through BUNAC's Intern UK programme. BUNAC are UK government approved scheme of the Temporary Worker Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) visa category.

If you have not already, please read through the internship eligibility  page of our website to find out more about BUNAC and the conditions of the Intern UK programme.

BUNAC will conduct a thorough screening of your company to ensure your compliance with the conditions of the programme before and during the proposed internship. While BUNAC are responsible for the compliance of the programme, you remain responsible to follow UK law and employment regulations throughout the programme duration.

If you are approved as a host employer, BUNAC will issue your intern with a Sponsorship Reference Number (SRN), which will allow them to apply to the UK government for a Temporary Work - Government Authorised Exchange visa.

Please read through the terms and conditions of your application with BUNAC found at the end of this form before submitting. If you are found in breach of these terms and conditions during the internship your intern's sponsorship could be terminated and you could be in breach of the UK Visa and Immigration rules.

If you have any questions or doubts about your eligibility, don't hesitate to contact the BUNAC compliance team by emailing internships@bunac.org.

Please note, this form will be submitted to UKVI so all information must be completed to a high standard, and completed by you, the employer.

  • Your Company Details

  • Company Addresses

  • You must be able to provide a professional office space for the intern's placement:

    • Home-based offices are not allowed.
    • Co-working spaces or ‘hubs’ will be permitted as a professional space if the host employer / intern can easily be located at this space throughout the course of the internship. An example is that the space has a reception who can inform a visitor if the host employer and or intern is on site, and if not where they can be located.
    • Fully remote internships are only permitted in exceptional cases (e.g., government-mandated lockdowns) and require proof of structured remote supervision.
  •  -
  • Number of employees

  • Ensure a minimum full-time, on-site employee-to-intern ratio of 5:1.

BUNAC may, at its discretion, approve variations where the employer unequivocally proves sufficient supervision (i.e., more than two dedicated supervisors).

Factors considered in such cases include:

    • Departmental structure vs. company-wide workforce.
    • Supervisor-to-intern ratio and time spent together.
    • The complexity of assigned tasks

Examples of permitted and non-permitted arrangements that deviate from 5:1 ratio requirement:

    • Permitted: A parliamentary office with three full-time staff members (e.g., MP, undersecretary, office administrator) hosting one intern with continuous supervision.
    • Not permitted: An office with ten full-time staff hosting three interns, all reporting to one supervisor. If intern duties contribute directly to core operations or require replacement hiring in their absence, the internship will be rejected.
    • Any proposal with a ratio below 3:1 will be automatically rejected.
  • Please note that BUNAC requires there to be a full-time staff to intern ratio of 5:1.

If you have less than 3 full-time permanent staff please contact the team at internships@bunac.org to clarify your eligibility as a host employer.

  • Salary & NMW Exemptions

  • BUNAC must certify that the role sponsored will comply with National Minimum Wage (NMW) and Working Time Regulations. The GAE route is designed to provide work experience, volunteering, job-shadowing, and internships.

You must declare the intern's classification according to the National Minimum Wage Manual by selecting one of the following categories:

    • Worker (entitled to NMW) - See here: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage/who-gets-the-minimum-wage
    • Voluntary worker (the employer must meet charity status requirements or be a statutory body)
    • Volunteer (the intern can terminate the internship at any time, can set their own schedule and is not obligated to fixed working hours, and does not receive any benefits or payment that could be considered wages)
    • Job-shadowing only (the intern will only learn through observation and will not perform tasks classed as work)

    See here: https://www.gov.uk/employment-rights-for-interns

    See here: https://www.gov.uk/volunteering/volunteers-rights

Internships longer than 6 months, must be paid positions. Volunteer, voluntary or job shadowing roles cannot exceed 6 months.

  • Image-71
  • Employers offering voluntary internships can only cover reasonable out of pocket expenses and cannot offer a stipend. It is up to the employer to comply with gov.uk volunteer regulations.

  • Supernumerary

  • BUNAC can only sponsor the internship if it is in addition to your normal staffing requirements. This means the role only exists for us to sponsor, and if BUNAC were not sponsoring someone for the role, it would not be filled by anyone else.

The intern must not qualify for another immigration route, particularly the Skilled Worker route. This scheme is designed for short-term internships that do not meet requirements of alternative work visas.

This route cannot be used to 'trial' employees or extend the stay of any existing employee.

    We will assess:

    • Whether the intern’s training involves varied learning experiences or is limited to a single function.
    • Who else in the organisation currently carries out the work the intern will be involved in.
    • Whether the work the intern is undertaking corresponds to seasonal or surge demand that would typically require additional staffing.
    • The number of other interns or staff hired in the same period as the BUNAC-sponsored intern.

  • Internship Role Description

Roles must fall under Tables 1, 2 or 3 of the Appendix Skilled Occupations list:

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-appendix-skilled-occupations
