AlterTheater meets actors through the Theatre Bay Area General Auditions and by bringing in actors to read pages at its AlterLab playwright residency. We occaisionally hold show specific or season general auditions.
The AlterLab new play development and production program consists of:
--AlterLab playwright residency (during the residency, we invite actors in to read pages so playwrights (who have final casting authority) can get to know them and actors can get to know our writers)
--AlterLab workshops. This is a 29 hour developmental workshop (over the course of 2 weeks) under the Equity Staged Reading Guideliness. This pays a stipend.
--AlterLab productions: We operate under the MBAT Tier I with Actors' Equity, which is a minimum wage based contract, for a 20-hour/week rehearsal period. Non-union actors are paid hourly at minimum wage (currently $14/hour)
--AlterLab new media work: During the pandemic, we began producing radio plays, under the SAG-AFTRA New Media Contract. Pay is $125/day. AEA and Non-union actors are also signed to a SAG-AFTRA contract, but under this agreement, actors are not required to also join SAG-AFTRA, and it has no standing on an actor's relationship with SAG-AFTRA. However, we are unclear on whether we can hire Fi-Core actors under this agreement. If this applies to you, we will find out. Just please let us know.
