• Wildlife Release Site

    Expression of Interest
  • Thank you for expressing an interest in becoming a release site for rehabilitated wildlife!  Our volunteer wildlife carers work hard to rescue and rehabilitate our local wildlife and one of their biggest challenges is finding a safe location to release them.

We appreciate you taking the time to complete this form so we have a good understanding of what species would best suit you and your property.

Before you start, it is helpful if you have some recent photos of your property you can upload. This will help us assess the suitability of your property for various species.

    Government Legislation

The release of wildlife in Queensland is governed by the Nature Conservation Act 1992.  Wildlife volunteers are further governed by the Code of Practice – Care of Sick, Injured or Orphaned Protected Animals in Queensland.

These legislations restrict how and where rehabilitated wildlife can be released.  In general, wildlife must be released back as close as possible to their original rescue location.  This is very important as most wildlife have a defined home range and some are very territorial.  The Wildcare Release Site program will help us to find nearby properties where rescued wildlife can be safely released away from roads and other dangers.

    Privacy

Wildcare will not use the personal information provided by you in this form for any purpose other than to communicate with you regarding utilising your property as a release site.  We will not use, sell or distribute your personal details for any marketing purposes.

Your contact details and information relating to your property will only be used by registered Wildcare wildlife carers.

  • Property Details

Please provide information regarding your property, access and natural habitat.
  • Property Access

Some animals benefit from being soft released from a mobile release aviary (see photos below).  The aviary would need to be positioned in a location where it can be easily navigated with a vehicle and be situated next to natural bushland.  The aviary does not need to be positioned deep within the bushland, just on the edge.
  • Vegetation

  • Water Sources - Dams, ponds etc.

Some wildlife species are reliant on water sources such as ducks, Swamp Hens and Freshwater Turtles.
  • Feral animal control measures

Some methods of animal control pose a direct risk to our wildlife.  It may have an impact on what species are released.
  • Domestic Pets

Please provide information about any pets you may have as this may impact the species suitable for release on your property.
  • Livestock

Did you know that cows and horses have a particular dislike for koalas?!  Some livestock may pose a risk to released wildlife.
  • Photos

We would appreciate if you could upload some photos of the natural bushland areas of your property as well as the location where you think a mobile release aviary would be most suited for placement.  Feel free to upload any other images or documents which you think would be useful, including property or vegetation maps.

  • Suitable wildlife for release at your property

  • Below is a list of some of the most commonly rehabilitated wildlife.

Please indicate which of these species you would be happy to have released on your property.

Please only indicate the species which you know to naturally exist on your property.  We cannot release wildlife in locations where they do not naturally occur.

Please note – this question will just give us an idea of the species you would be happy to release.  We will discuss this with you further, and in more detail, the requirements necessary as suitable animals come up for release.

The animals marked (*) below are ones which would often require the use of a mobile release aviary.  The species not marked can generally be released straight onto the property with no support feeding, or who aren’t suitable for the mobile release aviaries.

  • Please note – some species have been excluded from the list above:

    • Frogs – they cannot be relocated from their original rescue location due to the risk of spreading disease (such as Chytridiomycosis – Amphibian Chytrid Fungus Disease)
    • Kangaroos and wallabies – they require a large purpose-built release enclosure to release successfully
    • Venomous snakes – potential safety issues
    • Flying foxes – these are released back to their local camp/colony

  • Available support during release

  • Support feeding

When animals are released from a mobile release aviary, they will generally need to be housed in the aviary for between 5 to 14 days.  They can then be allowed free access in and out of the trailer as they please.  Some animals may require support feeding for between 5 to 30 days.

  • Installation of possum/glider boxes

Our wildlife carers prefer to send rehabilitated wildlife back out to the wild with their own ‘home’, particularly for possums and gliders.  The nest box is generally one which the animal has used during their rehabilitation, so they have already become accustomed to it and has their scent on it.
