This Nonya zongzi is a recipe from our late peranakan grandmum. They’re made with glutinous rice, candied winter melon, diced pork belly combined with various spices to give it a sweet yet savoury taste - a distinctive flavour of the Nonya Zong.

Our favourite Hokkien style Zong; similar to zongzi no.1 but with a slight modern twist. We’re replacing about 50% of the glutinous rice made with quinoa & millet (we can’t fully do 100 % since we still need some glutinous rice to get the zong to bind together). The other ingredients & process would be the same as Zongzi No.1.

The easiest to make among the other zong - this is the alkaline zong. Just two ingredients needed which is alkaline water & glutinous rice. The rice would be soaked in alkaline water before draining them. Then they will be wrapped and boiled for 4 hours before hanging to cool at room temperature. You may also find variations with red beans inside them.
