Water Warriors YEG Teams
Welcome to the Water Warriors Volunteer family! We are a 100% volunteer run Alberta charitable organization.
We are a team that has many big hearts that have been with us since the very beginning. We are a team that values self care; so while we ask for you to give of your time, we also respect that everyone has lives and needs rest and relaxation. We can't give from empty cups!
Street Team/Wagon Gang
The Street Team goes out on Thursday evenings to serve the inner city community. We provide food, water, clothing and harm reduction supplies. We walk and pull wagons of supplies with support vehicles. We meet our community members where they are at.
All Street Team participants need to be able to walk about 3km.
CARE Team
CARE Team is on Sunday afternoons. Volunteers hike different parts of the river valley with backpacks full of supplies to give to folks that need along the way. This is generally more physical than the larger Street Teams. You would need to be able to walk approximately 5km with sometimes steeper inclines.
All CARE Team participants need to be able to walk about 5km.
Water Wing Team
Water Wing goes out when the temperature reaches 24 degrees Celcius or higher. This is a driving event. If you don't drive, there is an option to carpool. We hand out cold water only. SUVs and/or trucks are greatly appreciated for water pick up and distribution.
Sandwich Team
Currently, sandwiches are being prepared in an AHS approved kitchen on Wednesday afternoon/evenings. We are generally preparing between 400 and 500 sandwiches to go out on Thursday evening.
Donation Sorting Team
The donation sorting team meets on Tuesday evenings at our warehouse located near Telus World of Science.
If you are someone that is able to do pick ups and drop offs of donations, this would also be the team for you.
Donation sorting events are always a hit with the volunteers. We always have fun while we work!
Sharps Team
Volunteers that are on the sharps retrieval team are picking up discarded needles and placing them into sharps containers. Universal Precautions training is appreciated, but not required. Training will be provided.
Harm Reduction Team
"Harm reduction is fundamentally grounded in principles that aim to protect human rights and improve public health. Treating people who use drugs—along with their families and communities—with compassion and dignity is integral to harm reduction. The use of drugs does not mean people forfeit their human rights - they remain entitled to the right to life, to the highest attainable standard of health, to social services, to privacy, to freedom from arbitrary detention and to freedom from cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, among others."
WWYEG Harm reduction team distributes clean use supplies as well as naloxone kits and tobacco. This team accompanies the larger street team on Thursdays.
To participate, you must be able to walk 5km and be able to carry a cross-body bag that weighs approximately 20 pounds. Training is provided.
Poisoning Response Team
The Poisoning Response Team members must have all had experience/training on the Harm Reduction team.
**Must have injectable and/or nasal naloxone training and current first aid/CPR Training as well as being able to walk 5km and carry 20 pounds to participate.
The Poisoning Response Team goes out as often as we have trained members available.
