Characteristics of animals I would be willing to foster
Felines
Bottle babies - Kittens without a mama cat who still need to be bottle-fed. These kittens will also need to be helped to go potty. (We can show you how!)
Orphan kittens – These kittens will be old enough to eat on their own but will need more care in terms of grooming than if they had a mom to do the job. These kittens can be anywhere from 5 to 7 weeks old.
Short-term kittens - 6 to 7 week old kittens that just need 2 to 3 weeks to get to the required age and weight to be adopted.
Mom and kittens - This can vary from newborn to 4-week-old kittens. This is a longer commitment but sometimes an easier foster as mamma cat does all the work.
Medical foster - Cats that need to be medicated for some type of illness.
Surgical foster - A cat that needs time to recuperate from a surgery such as an amputation, eye removal or even an extensive dental procedure.
Semi-feral feline - A timid cat or kitten that needs more social exposure to humans and a home environment.
Canines
Mommy & Me - Pregnant mama or mama with puppies.
Short-term puppies - Puppies too young to be adopted.
Young adult dogs- Dogs needing extra training and more human interaction.
Shelter Dog Getaway- Dogs suffering from "shelter stress" who are in need of a calm home environment.
Medical Foster- Sick, injured or post-surgery dogs, or dogs with special medical needs.
Golden Paw Getaway- Senior dogs that will be more comfortable in a home environment.
Weekend Getaway- Dogs that would benefit of a short break. This type of foster provides the dog with a much needed one-on-one time and help us with valuable information to best match our dogs with their future homes.
Thank you for your interest in being a life saving foster with the Kokomo Humane Society! We will provide you with all the supplies you need to successfully care for our animals.
I agree to the following conditions as a Foster Parent for the Kokomo Humane Society:
1. I agree and certify that my own pets are currently up to date on all their vaccinations, including rabies.
2. I agree to keep my pets separated from the foster animal(s) when necessary or directed to by the Humane Society.
3. I agree to keep all foster animal(s) indoors unless accompanied by me. Dogs must be confined when outdoors either by a leash, tether or fence. Cats are to remain indoors at all times.
4. I agree that if the foster animal(s) become ill while in my care, I will contact the Kokomo Humane Society, which will determine treatment and/or disposition of the foster animal(s).
5. I agree to have KHS staff or volunteers complete reference calls to my veterinarian to complete my foster application.
6. I agree and I accept full responsibility for the animal(s) actions at all times, and release KHS from any liabilities or damages that may be incurred because of fostering such animal(s).
7. I agree and I fully understand that the foster animal(s) are the property of the Kokomo Humane Society and that I may not under any circumstances sell or give these animals away. I agree to follow any decision made by the Kokomo Humane Society regarding the return and/or disposition of the fostered animal(s).
I certify that the above information is true to the best of my knowledge. I also acknowledge falsification of the above can result in being denied being a foster to an animal or if I am currently fostering an animal, the return of that animal to KHS animal shelter.
