    APPLICATION TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER FOSTER CARER

  • Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster carer with Rescue Cats Safe Haven. Your answers will help us to assess your suitability for foster caring, and to match you up with an appropriate foster cat or kitten for your circumstances.

  • Would you be able to transport a foster cat as needed (eg. to/from vet where necessary collect and/or deliver as required etc.)

  • ABOUT YOUR PREFERENCES:

  • Would you be interested in fostering a cat until it has found a home?
  • Are you going on holiday or going to be away in the near future?
  • Do you have any experience with young/new born kittens?
  • Do you have any experience with caring for sick pets?
  • Would you be interested in helping care for a cat or kitten with a manageable temporary condition? (eg. cat flu - these cats need to be isolated from other cats in the household. We can assist with accessing a holding crate and assistance with care as needed. We also cover vet care costs).
  • Do you have somewhere to isolate the cat if needed? (cats who are new to RCSH need to be isolated for 2-4 weeks before they can be mixed with other animals, due to the potential for incubating illness. It is safer to keep foster cats, separate to the carer's own animals as we cannot guarantee that an underlying condition will not develop at some time in the future. The risks of an underlying condition tend to be greater with cats rescued from a pound eg. FIV/FIP. This will be discussed with you prior to commencing fostering.

  • ABOUT YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES:

  • Is your rental accommodation secure?

  • Please note that unless you have a secure cat enclosure, foster cats MUST be kept indoors at all times.  This is for security to prevent cats getting lost or involved in a road accident.  

  • Would this be a problem?
  • Where would you be keeping the foster cat?
  • Do you have an outdoor cat enclosure?
  • Do you have any other pets?
  • Desexed?
  • Vaccinations/worming/flea treatments up to date?
  • Is everyone in your household supportive of you fostering?

  • Please check that all parties are in agreement before submitting your application form.

  • Is anyone in your household allergic to cats?
  • Do you feel confident in caring for a cat?
  • Would you have any problem with potential adopters coming to your home to view the foster cat/kitten at a mutually agreeable time?
  • Are your tetanus injections (recommended) up to date?
  • Foster carers must be reasonably contactable by telephone, and preferably email (although email is not essential). Would this be a problem?
  • An important part of being a foster carer is being able to work with others, working within foster care guidelines, to accept advice and act on instructions with regard to caring for the foster cat. Would this be a problem?

  • Please provide two character references ie. vet, minister, employer, doctor pet supplier/groomer (where you are a customer), charity where you do volunteer work, school, other.  Reference checks may be undertaken to confirm suitability for our foster program.

  • We are run solely by volunteers.  We receive no funding of any kind.  Our adoption fees go towards the necessary procedures (microchip/vaccination/de-sexing/flea/worming and vet check) for animals prior to their re-homing.  We make no profit from these fees, and often do not reclaim enough to cover our costs, especially when extra vet services are required, as they often are with rescue, surrendered or dumped cats and kittens.  We would appreciate all and any support you provide to maintain a foster cat/kitten.

  • WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT?

  • We will contact you within five working days of receiving your application form to discuss your application and potentially make an appointment to come out and do a pre-placement foster care site assessment, to confirm your suitability for proceeding with a foster placement.

    At the pre-placement stage we will answer any questions you may have about foster caring and get you to sign off on a foster care agreement (pending suitability for foster care).

    We will then seek to identify a suitable foster cat for your circumstances.  The length of time this takes, depends on your circumstances, the animals we currently have in care, or have access to rescuing.

    All cats are vet checked and vaccinated either prior to being placed with a foster carer or in the intial stage of their stay.  Depending on age and circumstance, the cat may or may not be de-sexed yet.

    Rescue Cats Safe Haven covers the reasonable and agreed costs of necessary vet care, as outlined in the foster care agreement.
