Behavior Management
When directing a child's behavior, caregivers should strive to praise the children often, creating opportunities to make them feel good about themselves.
For most children:
- If a child is choosing not to listen, be sure you have given adequate verbal warnings before action is taken.
- It is acceptable to let the uncooperative child sit out, away from the group, with a book or puzzle until he/she chooses to listen and follow directions.
- If the child is endangering him/herself or others, or is out of control, the child can be moved to a calming space by themselves with a calming activity or toy. The child should sit one minute for each year of his/her age. If the problem persists, a parent should be notified.
- Anytime a child cries continuously for fifteen minutes, a parent should be notified.
- Physical punishment of any kind is strictly prohibited, and is grounds for immediate termination of the caregiver. When working with children who have special needs, please refer to their individual plan designed for the individual with input from parents.
Children's Accidents
After any accident, immediately notify the Children's Ministry Director who will notify the parents. Accident reports should be filled out and are located in the classrooms or with the check-in sheets.
A first aid kit is located in each classroom. Clean the injury with soap and water only, and apply a bandage if needed.
Employee Accidents
If an accident or injury occurs while on the job, employees should document the accident in writing. Notify the Children's Ministry Director immediately, and give the written statement to the Children's Ministry Director.
