We here at NJ Advance Media are aware of the impact that our reporting can have on the lives of people we cover. We recognize and respect the “right to be forgotten” movement that allows people to request the removal of online content that reflects negatively on them, causing them embarrassment or reputational harm or making it difficult for them to gain employment. To address those requests in a fair and consistent manner, we formed a Content Removal Committee to consider such requests. The committee meets monthly to discuss and make decisions on the cases before it. To make a request to the committee, please use the Content Removal form above, and fill it out as completely as possible. The committee will acknowledge your request, review it, and let you know of its decision. The committee recognizes there are situations where people made a mistake in their life and don't deserve to have that haunt them into perpetuity through online search engines. However, we do not grant requests to remove names or stories involving major news events, serious crimes — particularly those involving violence/sexual assault — or public corruption. Reporters and editors here have no authority to take down a story or photo, or remove someone’s name from a news article. Those decisions are made solely by the Content Removal Committee. Please do not contact the author of the story directly or individual editors about removal requests. Once you have submitted a request using the form above, all communications regarding it should be directly with the committee. The committee does not have specific rules for what types of requests will be granted or denied. Each request is considered individually, based on the nature of the request and the impact on the person involved. All decisions of the committee are final.
