    Complete when requesting a course not currently in an approved Alabama Course of Study or renewing a previously submitted and approved new course request.

     

    All questions and communications relating to ALSDE Waiver Requests should be submitted to Superiwaivers@alsde.edu.

  • ALSDE Required Waiver Components

    Letter of waiver request from LEA superintendent and corresponding documents to the State Superintendent of Education should consist of the following:

    1. Completed ALSDE online waiver request form;

    2. Corresponding academic curriculum plan, which may include a course syllabus, course description, and course content standards (Examples are posted to www.alsde.edu);

    3. Additional documentation relevant to waiver request, if applicable (Example—letter(s) of support, meeting notes, etc.); and

    4. Formal letter of request from LEA superintendent on letterhead and addressed to the State Superintendent:

    An electronic copy of the signed LEA Superintendent letter must be submitted on the form below.
     

  • LEA Required Waiver Assurances

    Collaboration
    Ongoing discussion with any/all proposed teacher(s) involved in the waiver and subject matter expert educator(s) to develop academic/curriculum plan, if applicable. (Example—Physical Education teacher and Marching Band Director, core subject and elective teacher(s), etc.)

    Planning
    Approved academic/curriculum plan will be fully implemented and a copy will remain on file at each school and with system-level administration.

    Athletics
    Only student athletes who are registered with the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) are approved through a sport-specific physical education course waiver.

    Communication
    Notification of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and AHSAA academic eligibility guidelines are clearly communicated to students and parents. Notification of waiver approval status is annually reviewed and communicated to school administrators, school staff, students, and parents.

    Documentation
    Copy of ALSDE formal waiver approval will be uploaded to Student Information System (SIS) and a copy will also be included in student cumulative records, if applicable.

    Waiver Approval School Year(s) Impact
    LEAs must ensure that waiver requests are followed based on school year(s) approved (2 years) AND resubmitted if the LEA chooses to continue the waiver past the approved school year.
