The 6-step Volunteer Enhanced DBS Application Process:
Four parties are involved in the Volunteer Enhanced DBS application process: you (the applicant), the MUS DBS Office, the screening provider, and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Each plays a different role.
You complete and submit the application, MUS manages the application, verifies your submission and forwards it to the screening provider. The screening provider processes and verifies your details, rechecks the application and submits it to the DBS. The government DBS carries out the official background check and issues the certificate, sending the document to your address. The cost of a Volunteer Enhanced DBS Application is £25.
1. You (Applicant)
Complete this application form, ensuring all details such as your name, date of birth, contact number, and email address are accurate and clearly filled in.
Upload three supporting documents in this form for identity verification. These will be used for DBS checks, so the same documents must be provided here and later on the screening provider’s portal.
2. MUS DBS Office
Once you have submitted this form, the MUS DBS Office team logs your details and forwards your application to the DBS screening provider.
3. Screening Provider & You (Applicant)
The screening provider (DDC) will email you your login details for their online portal. You’ll need to log in to continue the application process, complete the remaining steps, and re-upload the same documents for verification.
Please note that the email may sometimes be delivered to your spam or junk folder, so it’s worth checking there if you don’t see it in your inbox.
4. Screening Provider & MUS DBS Office
Once you have submitted your application on the portal, the MUS Document Checker will review your supporting documents and confirm with the screening provider so your information can be submitted to the DBS team.
5. Screening Provider & Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
If everything is correct, the screening provider will forward your application to DBS and provide you with a DBS Applicant Form Reference so you can track progress.
6. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) & You (Applicant)
DBS then carries out the official background check. An Enhanced DBS certificate is usually issued and sent to your address within 4–8 weeks, although additional checks may sometimes extend this timeframe.
