How to Use Berufenet

(Updated Feb. 2023!)
  • 1

This guide will walk you through using Berufenet and should help those who don't speak German fluently. The site is only available in German, but it's a great resource. If you notice something isn't working (and you're sure you chose a Studienfeld!) please get in touch - they re-launched the site at the end of 2022 and occasionally there are new features and updates.

    Let's get started!

Go to Berufenet's (new!) Entdeckerwelt Studienfelder https://web.arbeitsagentur.de/berufenet/studienfelder and look up your field of study. Type the (ideally German) title of your degree program in the search field you see below (marked "Was?"). Fields of study will always be labelled "grundständig" for bachelor's programs or "weiterführend" for master's programs.

(Make sure that you look up a field of study - Studienfach - and not a job or career path. If it is not labelled "grundständig" or "weiterführend" it is not a degree program - select only degree programs for this activity or you will not find the information you are looking for.)

Click on your field (grundständig for bachelor's programs, weiterführend for master's).

Go to Linguee and type in your field of study. See if you can find a translation into German that fits. Try each translation. When you've found something close to your field of study, select that option in the search.

If you aren't sure if it's the right fit, click on Studium and look at the courses and content listed. Does this fit your degree?

If you don't think this is the best fit, click on "Alternativen" in the menu at the top of the page.

You'll find a list of alternative programs - see if any of these better fit your program title.

Select one of these and see if it is a better fit. Keep going until you've found something that works for you. If you can't find an exact fit, go through the steps for multiple programs to collect a variety of information.

On the left-hand side of the screen, select "Berufliche Einsatzmöglichkeiten" from the menu (or scroll to the bottom of the page). Your screen will say "Perspektiven" and not "Arbeitsmarkt"

The section "Mögliche Tätigkeitsfelder" will help you understand basic information about how Germans view employment oportunities in your field. Under that are lists of careers in each field.

Scroll down to read the section Berüfstätigkeit nach Studium (you might need to click on the menu option, see screenshot below) to see some of the most typical careers in your field.

(If there's nothing there, click to the next screen here for the next step.)

Click on Typische Tätigkeitsfelder to see a list of typical fields and careers for people with this degree in Germany.

You can click on each of these careers (click the arrow next to Tätigkeitsfeld) for a description:

If you don't speak German well enough to feel comfortable reading this page, use DeepL to do a quick translation.

Make notes of the fields and career paths you see listed.

Select Weitere Tätigkeitsfelder to see additional career paths in this field that are less typical.

Make notes of the career paths that you find. If you weren't sure about how well the (translated) degree program you chose fit your actual degree program, sometimes it can be helpful to try multiple options.
