In April of 2019, Cicadas & Coneflowers Writers Workshop for Trans Writers of Color brought together ten trans writers of color from across the country to hold space, share stories, and build community in Saint Louis, Missouri. The workshop set out as an experiment in what could happen if trans writers of color were brought together to build an environment of care and creativity and to immerse themselves into the craft of storytelling for and by trans writers of color. We theorized that if we could build a writing workshop that worked to first care for its writers needs that the process of collaborative creativity could in fact become more powerful and resonate for writers and instructors as they worked in the practice of imagining, writing, editing, and storytelling.
Cicadas & Coneflowers Writers Workshop aims to amplify, uplift, and enhance the voices and narratives of trans writers of color. This workshop intends to do the important work of building an intentional space for trans writers of color to join together with other writers and instructors in exploring the resilience and power in trans narratives. The workshop has one simple request of our writers: Join us at the table to craft and curate your stories, and we will take care of the rest. This intentional framework means our workshop seeks to care for our writers needs for their time with us in exchange for intentional and meaningful work as writers, creative artists, and storytellers.
Writers must be 18 years old or older to apply for this workshop. Only applicants who apply through this form will be considered for acceptance to this workshop. Applicants must be willing to join workshop particpants and instructors at The Writers Colony At Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas on the dates of November 4th-7th, 2021.
Cicadas & Coneflowers' second season workshop will be intentionally focused on trans women, trans femmes, (C)AMAB gender-nonconforming and nonbinary writers of color. We are also putting intentional emphasis and consideration for black and indigenous trans women, trans femmes, and (c)AMAB writers and strongly urge writers who fall within these lived experiences to apply. Cicadas & Coneflowers does plan on opening up applications to other trans folks and writers of color who fall outside of the trans femme spectrum for our third season. More information to follow when applications for season three are completed.
Submissions are due before midnight on September 6th, 2021.
Acceptance letters to writers will be delivered via the email address provided on this form on or before October 6th, 2021.
