The Neumann Kaffee Gruppe Partnership to Advance Coffee Equity (NKG PACE) is a paid, one-year training program offering members of the Black community — a group that experiences the largest gap in employment and decision-making roles in the U.S coffee industry — the opportunity to become green coffee quality specialists.
NKG PACE will combine apprentice-style learning with a formal coffee education and be augmented by a mentorship program through the Coffee Coalition for Racial Equity (CCRE). While focused on Quality Control, the program will allow participants to learn from and work in support of multiple departments at an import company that works closely with 50 sister companies around the globe — and roaster customers across the country.
Three positions a year will be offered for placement in three of the four Neumann Gruppe USA (NGUS) offices — Atlas Coffee Importers in Seattle; InterAmerican Coffee in San Diego, CA, and Houston, TX; and the lab shared by InterAmerican Coffee and Rothfos Corporation in Hoboken, NJ. Light relocation packages will be available. The position requires the ability to travel for a 1-week orientation in Hoboken and the ability to attend a 1-week placement at a sister office over the course of the year. (In both instances, travel and accommodations will be provided.)
NKG PACE is accepting applications through Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. ET. Promising candidates will be contacted to schedule a video interview. The top 10 finalists will be mailed sensory kits complete with materials and instructions for a guided sensory evaluation; their performances will help determine the three individuals who will be invited to the program. The selected candidates will be notified by March 1, and the program will begin in May 2, 2022 (national health recommendations permitting).
Ideal candidates will meet the following descriptions:
+ Flexible, adaptable and helpful
+ A critical thinker and proactive communicator
+ Able to balance the exciting work of sensory assessment with more routine responsibilities, such as weighing samples, washing cupping equipment and mailing packages
+ Highly organized
+ Strong attention to detail
+ Self motivated
+ Preferred but not required: Experience in coffee or a sensory-adjacent field
+ The ability to demonstrate sensory skills
+ High school diploma, GED or equivalent. At least 21 years of age.
