My name is Jake Randolph and I work as an RN at St. V’s in the Medical/Surgical/Trauma ICU. I graduated from UT’s Nursing program in 2019 and if someone would have told me I was going to experience all of this craziness as a new nurse, I would’ve done the same thing all over again.
I was a lifeguard for about four years, which is where I grew my passion for helping others. Everything I knew was proactive, but I wanted to know how to react and treat people if they really did get hurt. I have come to love what I do and the people I work with, so work for me feels fun a lot of the time. I Joined AACN because I have realized that I can learn so much from others, and it is truly amazing how all of the moving parts in the medical field come together
with one objective: patient care.
My favorite thing to do as a nurse is put in IV’s - there is no greater feeling. My favorite type of drugs are definitely paralytics, but that might just be the Covid nurse in me. You will often find HGTV on or Iheartradio playing in my patients’ rooms. My favorite hospital snack is chocolate pudding, a close second to that being chocolate milk. I think it’s noteworthy to add that I have never eaten anything from a potluck at work or bought anything from the hospital cafeteria. My
favorite of the many names I've been called at work is “Jake from St. V’s”. At work I try to always be positive and project that onto everyone else I am working with. Besides being positive, coworkers might say that I am very compassionate, helpful, “by the books”, and most importantly a germaphobe.
Outside of work, my main hobby is really just spending time with my people. I spend a lot of time outside, whether that be taking a walk, coming from/going to Costco, going for a drive in orwashing my Sonata, playing sports that I am rarely good at, or spending time by any type of water. My favorite food is rice because there’s so much you can do with it, but tropical smoothie and chick-fil-a would beg to differ. My favorite TV series is “This is Us”, which is the only thing I really watch besides the occasional episode of Impractical Jokers.
Working as a nurse has been an amazing experience so far, and I contribute that greatly to thepeople I work with. I am eager to continue connecting with others in this field and lookingforward to an active year in AACN.
