Purpose:
Frederick County Work and Learn Internship Program is an effort to support the recovery after the economic impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic. This program offers support to businesses in one of Frederick County's high-growth/high-demand (HG/HD) industries and Frederick County residents in reconnecting to the labor market. This program provides wage reimbursement to Frederick County businesses that host paid work experiences in occupations that are in critical demand.
Frederick County private sector (for-profit and non-profit) businesses within the target industries are eligible to submit an application. Businesses are encouraged to identify and select candidates for the internship experience. This initiative may be funded partially or in full by the United States Department of Labor
Business Requirements:
- Businesses in good standing, operating in one of Frederick County’s HG/HD industries.
- Host a work experience to provide practical experience in an occupation that is in alignment with the intern's current education and/or training program.
- Provide a job description and hire the intern as an employee adhering to all related employment laws including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
- Provide at least minimum wage for the duration of the internship.
- Provide an approved Certificate of Insurance, W-9, and other documents as requested.
- Provide a structured and supervised work experience in alignment with the job description.
- Provide FCWS with progress reports at the mid-point and at the conclusion of the internship.
Internship Requirements:
- Work and Learn Internship experiences are in alignment with a related program of instruction (training or degree program).
- Interns are currently enrolled (or graduated within 6 months) in an education and/or training program related to the job description.
- Work is conducted in a supervised and structured work environment.
- Funds provide reimbursement of wages, other costs are not reimbursable.
- The internship may be full or part-time, and may not exceed 40 hours/week.
- Funding is limited to 4 months or up to a funding cap of $5000 per intern.
- Funding is limited to $10K per participating business.
- Internships must be completed no later than June 3, 2022.
- Priority is given to Frederick County residents.
Application Process:
- Employers submit a complete application, Internship Job Description, and wage information.
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are approved until funds are exhausted. Funding is based on availability.
- All applications submitted will receive a notification of status within 10 business days of the application date.
- Approval must be given in advance of the hire date. Reimbursement cannot be applied retroactively.
Approved Applications:
- FCWS provides businesses with insurance requirements and businesses provide FCWS with approved Certificate of Insurance and W-9.
- Employer identifies Intern, start date, and the number of hours per week.
- Intern provides FCWS with identification, proof of address, and verification of training/school enrollment/graduation.
- Worksite agreement is signed by Employer and Intern.
- Internship begins.
