Thank you for your interest in adopting/fostering from Suceava Public Shelter in Romania.
Whether this is the first time you are applying for adoption or if you have rescued before - it is very important that you are informed about the process of adopting from Romania and what this entails.
The welfare conditions in Romania are not as well established as in other parts of the world and so, therefore, many dogs have only ever experienced cruelty and neglect from humans, some have had to fight for their own lives and with some, we don't have any background knowledge prior to them being dumped at the shelter / found on the streets.
Suceava Public Shelter always assesses the dogs and their temperament to the best of their ability and thus provides honest descriptions of any behavioural issues that have been displayed at the shelter. It is very important to bear in mind that these dogs may never have lived in a home environment before, and that this can cause behaviours to manifest in a way that had not been witnessed in their previous environments when being assessed.
*PLEASE NOTE - This is a Public Shelter, which means we are unable to test the dogs with any cats or children. This would be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
We have many success stories, and we invite you to join our Adopters Club should your application be successful. While not all dogs are traumatised it is important to recognise the dog may have grown up in difficult conditions and would require love, time, and patience to settle into their new environment. They will arrive shell-shocked from their journey, please be prepared for them to take days, weeks, or possibly months to fully decompress.
These dogs may never have lived indoors before, they may never have had routine, comfort, or warmth, so we want to equip you to be prepared for all eventualities and deal with the typical challenges that may manifest upon their arrival.
Below is a list of some of the typical behaviours your new dog may demonstrate.
- Resource Guarding
- Separation Anxiety
- House Soiling
- Demanding Attention
- Snatching at Food
- Escaping
- Running Off
- Fear of New People (growling/reactivity)
