  • Prior to commencing works or issuing permit - 

    Consider whether work can be done in another way or in a controlled environment (hot work bay?)

    All relevant sections must be fully completed and signed by persons completing and authorising works prior to commencing hot work

    Person doing work: Fill in start time and hang in a highly visible position near the Hot Work operation. When the operation is complete, fill in the completion time. 

    Fire Watch (where required): When the operation is complete, stay in location or 1 hour. After 1 hour notify Site Safety Supervisor of satisfactory completion of the operation. 

    Site Safety Supervisor (or Department Manager / Supervisor): Initially inspect the work area and complete the precaution checklist. Keep a copy and issue the original to the person completing the Hot Work. Make final inspection after the Hot Work and Fire Watch have been completed.

  • Fire Watch

  • The work area and adjacent areas to which sparks and heat may have spread (including floors above and below and on opposite sides of walls) have been continuously inspected for 1 hour after the work was completed and were found fire safe. 

    Fire Watchers shall be required by the individual responsible for authorising Hot Work wherever cutting, grinding or welding is performed in locations where other than a minor fire may develop, or where: 

    1. Combustible material in building construction or contents is closer than 15m to operation
    2. Large amounts of combustibles are more than 15m away but are easily ignited by sparks
    3. Wall or floor openings within 15m radius expose combustible material in adjacent areas, including concealed spaces in walls and floors
    4. Combustible materials are adjacent to the opposite site of metal partitions, walls, ceilings, or roofs and are likely to be ignited by conduction or radiation

  • Trained in use of equipment and in raising / sounding alarm*
  • Area smoke detection re-instated where appropriate after work completed*

  • General

  • Cutting and welding equipment is in good working condition*
  • If work conducted on enclosed equipment, confined space entry permit issued*
  • Date of gas testing*

  • Area smoke detection isolated where appropriate*

  • Work on Walls or Ceilings

  • Will work be conducted on walls or ceilings?*
  • Construction is non-combustible and without combustible covering*
  • Exposed combustible ceiling and wall insulation covered or removed*
  • Combustibles moved away from opposite side of wall*

  • Work on enclosed equipment (tanks, containers, ducts, dust collectors)

  • Will work be conducted on enclosed equipment?*
  • Equipment cleaned of all combustibles (and tested where necessary)*
  • Containers & workplace checked for presence of flammable vapours (explosive atmosphere testing to confirm where applicable)*

  • Working in Proximity

  • Please consider the following hazards when hot work is conducted within 15m of the work area

  • Floors swept clear of combustibles*
  • Combustible floors wet down or covered with non-combustible shield or materials*
  • All ordinary combustibles and flammable / combustible liquids removed*
  • Covers suspended beneath elevated works to collect sparks or debris*
  • All hazardous operations discontinued*
  • Have any drains / pits & depressions been isolated and sealed*
  • Is there adequate ventilation in work area?*
  • Are there sparks and flash screens in place (where possible)?*
  • Is the wind direction satisfactory for hot work to be done*
  • Has product or vehicle movement been stopped in the area of hot work*
  • Has the site of the hot work been isolated and cordoned off?*
