  • An introduction to our Club

  • Thank you very much for your interest in membership of the Sea View Yacht Club.

We have operated as a Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight since 1893. While our 2000 members include the first woman to captain a boat in the Whitbread around the world race and an Olympic multi-gold winner, the majority are families who enjoy simple boating. With our glorious panoramic views over the Solent, there is simply no better place than the Sea View Yacht Club to spend happy days both on and off the water, when in and around Seaview.

We welcome members of all abilities and offer a wide range of sailing and social events for all. As with most yacht clubs, our main activities are centred around the summer season when there are daily opportunities to sail, motor or paddle in local waters in a diverse mix of crafts from sailing yachts, motor yachts, RIBs, dinghies, to Optimists, rowing boats and standup paddle boards. We also have a lively set of social activities on the Club’s decks and in the clubhouse throughout the year.

    Training at SVYC

We are a Royal Yachting Association Training Academy and run a full range of training courses for sailors from young children first learning to sail, to courses for adults of any stage and ability, in either dinghies or the Club’s keelboats.

Our training courses do not just cover sailing but also RYA powerboat, instructor, VHF radio and basic navigation courses, particularly in the late spring and early summer to enable members to prepare for their summer activities.

    Boats

We are unusually fortunate in being able to offer a variety of sailing to members whether or not they own their own boats. The Club owns a fleet of thirteen keel boats, the Seaview Mermaids, which members race regularly throughout the summer during the day and early evening with between 2 and 4 crew; the Mermaids also race at Cowes Week and, because they are shared, represent excellent value for money.

In addition to the keel boats, the Club also owns a large fleet of sailing dinghies which are available for members to charter, ranging from Optimists, Teras, Picos and Fevas to Lasers, Visions and Dart 16s.

If you have your own dinghy, we have a large dinghy park available to store it during the season with very easy access to the water. If you own a RIB, there is the opportunity to arrange a mooring via the local boatbuilder and the Club provides a launch service which is always readily available throughout the season.

Some SVYC members own their own wooden clinker-built Sea View One-Design Dinghies (SVODs); this unique class was founded in 1931, and now numbers 202 dinghies in the fleet, most which were built in the village. The SVOD class is proud to be the largest locally built one-design dinghy class anywhere in the world.

    Socialising at the SVYC

We have a very active social calendar with fun events for all ages throughout the summer, ranging from Apres Sail drinks, interesting talks, to dinners, dances, discos for the children and themed family suppers, as well as other social events throughout the winter including our very popular Sunday roasts.

Our chef produces food throughout the summer season.

As a member, you will be able to enjoy food and drink either inside the clubhouse or on our waterside decks, with gentle music playing on weekend evenings, resulting in a relaxed vibe in a stunning location with unrivalled views over the Solent and our Seaview sunsets.

Other shore-based events at SVYC which are very popular with members include bridge suppers, golf days and tennis groups.

    Fun for the Children

Our Club is very family-orientated with formal sailing courses starting at age 8 but also organised activities for younger children, both on and off the water. ‘Cockles Club’ has become a great SVYC tradition - a wonderful and extremely popular few days of fun and activities catering for children from 3 to 7 years old, which is a lovely way for them and their parents (and grandparents!) to make new friends at the Club.

We have an arrangement with Wightlink whereby SVYC members get a discount on sailings, particularly at peak times. Bookings are made via the Club
    Website.

If you would like to visit the Club, have a look around and chat to one of our friendly welcoming team, please send an email to membership@svyc.org.uk, giving your phone number so we can call you to set up a date.

  • How to join the SVYC

  • It’s a quick and easy process. The next page sets out Membership categories, current subscription rates and relevant bye-laws of the Club.

The following page contains the online application form - this is currently in beta testing so let us know how it can be improved.

If you are not a sailor or have limited experience in boats, please do not be put off by the questions about sailing or other boating experience – this is by no means a pre-requisite, but we love to know about our new members’ level of interest in boating, as well as other social activities which the Club has to offer, so we can chat to you about likely areas of interest.

As you will see, in addition to giving us all the relevant details about yourself, you will need a Proposer and Seconder who must have been Club members for over two years (and not married to each other) and a member of the Club’s General Committee to support your application. This does not apply to Cadet and Sprits applicants provided at least one parent is a current member. If you do not know two members to propose and second you and/or a GC member, please let us know and we will be happy to introduce you to them, so you can meet up, have a chat and arrange for them to help you with your application.

Your application will be submitted online, along with your first subscription payment and, if applicable, your entrance fee (see the attached list of current subscriptions).  This payment will be fully refundable in the unlikely event that your application is unsuccessful.

When payments are made and how

New members pay an entrance fee as well as an annual subscription. The entrance fee is equivalent to a year's subscription and is spread over two years - this fee is waived for spouses.

If you join the Club in the first half of the year (so between 20th September and 1st April), you will pay the half of the Annual Subscription, plus the first 25% instalment of your Entrance Fee. The second half of the annual subscription will be due on the 1st May along with a further 25% of your Entrance fee.

If you join in the second half of the year (so between the 1st April and 20th September), you will pay the full Annual Subscription, plus a 50% instalment of your Entrance Fee.

Thereafter, subscriptions are payable, in equal instalments, on 1st November and on 1st May, although an alternative monthly payment scheme is available.

Your initial payment should be made by debit or credit card; thereafter all payments must be payable by Direct Debit.

SPECIAL TERMS & CONDITIONS APPLICABLE TO SOME CATEGORIES

    Overseas Members

An Overseas Member has to be resident outside the UK and is designed for members to pause their subscription when they move abroad. The number of days they are allowed to use the Club is restricted to 7 days in the summer period. If they exceed that number, they should pay the full subscription for the relevant membership category.

    Temporary Member

A Temporary Member can join for no more than four weeks in any calendar year, and during no more than one calendar year in five. A Temporary Member cannot introduce guests to the Club.

If you would like to apply for Temporary membership, click on the appropriate link on the next page.

    Associate Sailing Member

An Associate Sailing Member may participate in organised Mermaid races, outside the Summer season, but not as a helm. They may not introduce guests to the Club nor nominate Temporary members.

If you would like to apply for Associate Sailing membership, please do NOT apply via this form, but get in touch with the SVYC Office.
