Petition Calling for the Termination of MS State Health Officer, Dr. Thomas Dobbs
As a citizen of the state of Mississippi, I am calling for the termination of Dr. Thomas Dobbs as State Public Health Officer.
A State Health Officer should be held to the highest professional standard and able to effectively lead with integrity during a public health crisis. Throughout our state's plight with COVID19, Dr. Thomas Dobbs has not demonstrated these characteristics. To the contrary, he has seemingly set the stage for public health to fail in the state of Mississippi.
Instead of respecting informed voluntary consent and showing faith in the people of Mississippi to be responsible for themselves and their families, Dr. Dobbs is bent toward heavy-handed, draconian public health policies. He publicly shames and name-calls the very taxpayers who fund his salary. Calling Mississippians "anti-science Nazis" and "excuse monkeys," is appalling, and clearly reflects his lack of ability to conduct himself with professionalism under pressure. To verbally attack the people of this state, then apologize saying, "I was frustrated and depressed" and they are "misinformed" and "delusional," clearly communicates his contempt for the people of this state who will not comply with his demands.
Dr. Dobbs’ push to vaccinate all healthcare workers exacerbates existing staffing shortages. Statewide, healthcare professionals report that hospitals and ICUs are, in reality, overloaded because of staffing shortages, and not a shortage of available beds, as Dobbs reports to the media. Recently, Dobbs announced that we are down approximately 2,000 nurses in 7 months, statewide. With new vaccine mandates looming over them, thousands more nurses are preparing to leave their careers. Instead of inspiring the people he leads, his guidance is fueling harmful backlash.
Dobbs' requirement to postpone all elective surgeries with the potential to require hospitalization, denies those patients’ access to medical care and will delay diagnosis and treatment of cancers, and other serious diseases. People in acute or chronic, severe pain may be deprived medical treatment. As a result, we will again see a trend of depression, overdose, and suicide.
His leadership does not align with the values held by the majority of Mississippians. His guidance and policies continue to create extreme hardship on hard-working Mississippi families and businesses, in addition to fostering resistance.
Mississippians deserve to have a Public Health Officer who is an effective leader with values in line with their own.
