Your senior year is prime time to explore recruiting events on campus. The heaviest recruiting season is the fall, but companies hire interns and full-time employees throughout the year. If you want to have a job or internship lined up by the time you graduate, campus recruiting events are a great tool.

    Career Fairs

BYU Career Services regularly hosts two large recruiting fairs: the STEM Fair and the Career Fair. At these fairs, companies set up booths in the Wilkinson center (or virtually) for students to introduce themselves and learn about company culture and roles that are open for hire. To learn about upcoming career fairs, check out this BYU Career Services webpage.

Career Services has resources to help you prepare for career fairs. It is generally best practice to dress professionally and bring several copies of your résumé to hand out to employers. It's also a good idea to prepare an Elevator Pitch so you have a solid introductory statement to make to recruiters. Career Services hosts workshops throughout the semester to help you prepare for all these aspects of career fairs. Those workshops are listed on the same webpage as the career fairs.

    Handshake

Another great recruiting resource for seniors is BYU Handshake. If you are unfamiliar with Handshake, make an account and start exploring.

Below is a screenshot of Handshake's homepage, followed by a discussion about the features of Handshake that may be most helpful to you.

In the top left corner of the homepage, there are three tabs: Jobs, Events, and Employers. The Jobs tab allows you to search for jobs in your area of interest, filtering for location and employment type. Employers who regularly hire BYU grads frequently post positions on the Jobs feature of Handshake. Most job postings include an application link.

The second tab, Events, shows you a list of all upcoming recruiting events and Career Services events on campus. There is a search function in this tab that will allow you to narrow down the list to the events you're most interested in. These events range from info sessions to workshops to networking events, and can help you get your foot in the door at various companies.

The third and final tab is the Employers tab. This area of Handshake can help you research companies who recruit at BYU. The benefit of familiarizing yourself with these companies is that you know they are already interested in hiring BYU grads, giving you an edge up as a BYU student. Additionally, the companies who are registered through BYU Handshake are often the same companies who attend career fairs, making Handshake an excellent tool for researching companies before attending recruiting events.
