  • Application for Provost’s Postdoctoral Research Scientist and Scholar Program at Columbia University

  • The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement is pleased to issue a Request for Proposals for the second cohort of the Provost’s Postdoctoral Research Scientist and Scholar Program at Columbia University as part of the Inclusive Faculty Pathways initiative. This program, designed to advance the Schools’ inclusive excellence, supports the recruitment of outstanding postdoctoral scholars, who have faced barriers in their path to an academic career, to make sure Columbia is reaching those who reflect the composition of the national pool of qualified candidates. The purpose of the program is to develop postdoctoral candidates for possible faculty appointments at Columbia University and other universities. Therefore, the focus will be on supporting fellows from disciplines where the majority of recent tenure-track hires have come to Columbia after a postdoctoral position.

    The selection of postdoctoral research scientists/scholars is a two-stage process. All Stage I applications must be submitted using the form below.

  • Proposal

  • Please upload a proposal, from the Dean (and Department Chair, if applicable), to justify the position. Each proposal should include the following (each section denoted with a separate header):

    • Criteria for selecting the postdoctoral scientist/scholar based on academic achievement and how the candidate contributes to the mission of the program. 
    • Brief description of the School’s three-year diversity goals, and how a postdoctoral scientist/scholar would enhance the School’s progress to becoming more inclusive and ensuring that those who have faced barriers in their path to an academic career have opportunities to succeed.
    • The academic unit’s search plan, including a description for conducting a broad and inclusive search.
    • A mentorship plan outlining how the proposing unit will provide mentoring to the postdoctoral scientist/scholar, from their arrival to the search for their next position, to ensure the strongest career development and mentoring.

    Please use the template below to upload a budget narrative and table that details a three-year estimate of the projected budget needed to generate a competitive recruitment package in the proposed field. Please create separate lines for each budget item, and provide a yearly estimate of amounts of funds that will be requested from the Office of the Provost and provided by the School/Department.

    Please Note:

    • For each successfully recruited postdoctoral scholar, the Office of the Provost will provide up to $50,000 per year for three years ($150,000 total).
    • Funds must be matched by the applying School/Department.
    • This budget must include all anticipated costs requiring Office of the Provost support.
