- At PTVM, we rejoice in walking alongside your family in the spiritual formation of your child. Church School exists to nurture our children in the living Orthodox Christian Faith. We lay a foundation that enables them to live as faithful Orthodox Christians — growing in the knowledge and love of God as members of the Body of Christ. Church school is a central ministry in the life of our parish, one which we take seriously. We ask that every family take a moment to read through these policies carefully.
  
  Registration
  Children must be registered for Church School. This allows us to plan our classes effectively, and it ensures effective communication with parents. By submitting the registration form, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to abide by the policies and procedures below. Newcomers who start attending PTVM during the school year are welcome to join class, but after three visits to Church School, they will be asked to register before continuing.
  For the 2026-2027 year, we are pleased to offer five classes:
  •       Preschool: ages 2-4
  
  •       Primary: pre and emergent readers, approx. ages 5-7
  
  •       Junior: independent readers, approx. ages 8-10
  
  •       Middle School: approx. ages 11-13
  
  •       High School: 14+
  
  We are also starting a Children’s Choir this year, which will practice most weeks during the last ten minutes of Church School, and sing occasionally at the Divine Liturgy. Junior and Middle School classes are included in children’s choir by default. Children may be exempted from Choir with a parent’s notice.
  
  Your child will be placed in a class in accordance with their ability to participate and not strictly by their age. New students will be assigned a class on a provisional basis, while teachers and parents discern the right spot for them.
  
  Attendance
  Orthodox Christians are expected to make attendance at Sunday Liturgy a priority for the sake of their spiritual growth and salvation. Consistent Church School attendance is crucial, both for your own children’s learning and for the ability of our teachers to keep pace with the curriculum. We understand that life brings unavoidable conflicts, and that sickness is unpredictable, but we ask for your good faith commitment to attend Divine Liturgy every Sunday you are able. If you know in advance that your child will miss Church School, please inform their teacher. The church school year consists of 38 Sunday classes between Labor Day and Memorial Day. Children who are present for at least 28 Sundays (approximately 75%) will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the school year. In exceptional circumstances, such as children who do not live full time in one place, we can provide lessons for you to do with your children at home, so that they can still participate fully in Church School and receive their certificate.
  
  Behavior
  Behavior expectations change as kids get older. In general, children need to be respectful of the teacher and the class. If behavior becomes a problem, the teacher will address that with a child’s parent. We want to teach all of our children how to participate fully in the life of the class and the larger church community. But if a child’s behavior is making it impossible for the other children to learn, a parent will be asked to take them out of class that day and try again next Sunday. Some students may need a parent with them in the room to help keep them on track. Teachers and parents will cooperate closely to find the best course for each child. In the event of intractable disagreement, the parish rector may be asked to arbitrate.
  
  Snacks
  As a parish family, we share in caring for one another's children. Families are asked to bring snacks and juice boxes or water for the class as needed. Two boxes of snacks and juice; no popcorn. Please note any food allergies your child has when you register.
  
  Safety
  All teachers complete a background check and safety training prior to teaching. Two teachers are assigned to each class besides parent helpers, and as much as possible, there should be two adults present in every room at all times. When not in use, Church school rooms are to remain locked. Children should not be in them without adult supervision.
