  • Role Descriptions

Tutor – As a tutor, you’ll help refugee high school students with their school assignments. You’ll help with the subjects which you are comfortable with. Most of the youth refugee who attend Hasanaat take 2 to 3 English language learning classes, a lower math class (pre-algebra, Algebra, geometry), a history class for ESL students, and a science class. For the most part, students need help understanding the instructions, and solving them sample problems. The part they struggle with is understanding what is expected from them for the assignment.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher – This role requires someone with strong grasp of the English language. In a small group setting, you will help these students on their English language development. It will include subjects such as reading, writing, reading comprehension and spelling.

Game Room Monitor – At our location, we have a game room, snack room, and theater room open to students and volunteers. As a Game Room Monitor, you will be overseeing the game room and interact with the youth as they hang out and have fun. You will be responsible to ensure that the students are sharing the games and are properly using the games for their safety.

Floater (any position needed) – As a floater, you are open to the idea of volunteering for any position on a “as-needed” basis. This may include the positions listed above or any upcoming position that may come up. You are contacted when opportunities arise for the chance to sign-up.

Good to know for all our roles:

    • You are not required to work a specific schedule for any of our roles. However, our center is open from 4pm to 8pm from Monday to Thursday for tutoring and ESL. Volunteering times for those roles must fall between those time frames.
    • Game Room is open Friday from 4PM to 10PM and Saturday from 2pm to 10PM. Game Room Monitors are needed during those times. You are not expected to be available the whole day. However, knowing your schedule in advance makes it easier for us to ensure coverage for the duration of the day.
