  • READ ALL ABOUT IT

The following is this year's application reflection blurb. Please read and answer the questions that follow.

  • In 2023  feeling the need of a safe space and bonding. Aliyah Corrao decided to reach out to A2 BSU for consultation and support creating a BSU at Saline High School. Aliyah would go on to create and become President of the BSU at Saline. During her tenure she would create partnerships with several community organizations. While making great progress and strides in social justice reform. Bringing issues of hostile racial acts forward to the board and the news. Changing policy and culture around racism in the school community.

  • In February of 2023, several students and staff reached out to A2BSU about mistreatment of LGBTQ+ students at Pathways to Success Academic Campus. With a social media post shared across the entire BSU community and beyond. A movement was born. A2BSU helped amplify the voices of the students and sparked policy change and sensitivity training in the school. Also letting kids know the power of working together.

  • In 2020 Ann Arbor Pioneer student Makayla Kelsey fell victim to an alleged racial hostile act. This would become a defining moment for both Makayla who was known to be very quiet and shy and Also the BSU which was more known for its community service and events and not for its social justice moments. Both had to find their voices and stand on business and that they did sparking a two and a half year battle with Ann Arbor public schools. During this time microagressions were high. Sometimes BSU students felt bullied by staff and BSU was finding harder to move whether intended or unintended this was the prevailing feeling amongst BSU kids and their staff leaders. This culminated in a 75+ page investigative report from a firm hired by the district. This was also the catalyst for BSU becoming A2BSU and opening our borders to all schools in the greater Washtenaw County region. We moved our meetings to the Ann Arbor District Library Downtown and now we allow ANY High School student to join as long as they can make some meetings and want to participate.

  • Graduation is a big part of what we do. We want to make sure all of our students make it across the line and the end of their journey. Graduation is also a time to show off everything you accomplished in BSU. The more you participate in BSU events the more decorated your graduation stole will be. Here’s a few of our photos of our top members at graduation.

  • Trips and travel are a huge part of what we do here at BSU. A well traveled student is a successful student. Trips and travel are not possible without group fundraising. We cannot move anywhere without hard work as a collective. The more we put in as a group. The more we get to do as a group. Group fundraising is important and requires a lot of work and effort from All members.
