Student Question
Our first reading at Mass today is from the prophet Isaiah. As a reminder, prophets are people who lived before Jesus who told others that Jesus was coming. God tells Isaiah these words: “see, I am doing something new!” God gives us such a gift when He sends Jesus to walk among us on earth. Nothing has ever happened like this before, so God gives us something new when He sends Jesus. We know that when Jesus died for us and rose from the dead, He made all things new because we were given eternal life with Him. When was the last time you tried something new? What is something new you could do for God (a new prayer to try, a new Mass to go to, etc.)?

Between the first and second readings, we sing a psalm, which is a prayer in the form of a song. Today’s psalm reads, “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.” God created us out of nothing because He loves us, and we know every good thing in life comes from Him. We use the psalms and other songs to give God praise and show Him our joy. What is something that God has given you that has brought you joy?

In our Gospel reading today, we hear the story of a woman caught in adultery. Because she has broken the rules, many people want to kill her by throwing stones at her, which was the law at the time. But Jesus shows love and kindness to the woman, and tells the people that whoever has never broken the rules in their life can throw the first stone at her. Every single person leaves the woman alone because they know they also have sinned. Pretend you are one of the people around when Jesus is kind to the woman. What is something you could say to her to help her?

Parent Question of the Week
In our second reading today, Paul writes in his letter to the Philippians a very striking statement: “Brothers and sisters: I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Paul believes so fully in Jesus and His power to save that he goes so far as to say that everything else in life is nothing to him. What is a time when you have truly known that Jesus is the most important person in your life?
