Thank you for your willingness to serve in this small, but significant role as an usher. Your service helps things run smoothly before, during, and after worship at St. John.
Below you will find the simple guidelines of what an Usher does at St. John. Consider signing up with your spouse, children, or as a family.
We hope to be able to put out a schedule 3 times a year that spans over a 4 month period. Please fill out the form below indicating the service day/time you are available. Also, indicate if you have a preference on being scheduled to serve a certain week of the month.
Usher Duties and Responsibilities
Lectern Side – Looking forward Left Side, where the readings are down from
Pulpit Side – Ride side when looking forward, where Pastor preaches from
Purpose
- To assist parishioners in their worship by providing a warm, friendly and joyful atmosphere.
- To assist any who are in need, especially welcome new visitors. Let new families with small children know where the nursery & toddler room, and bathrooms are located as well as point out the kid’s activity bags.
- Answer any question people might have, refer them to the Elder or Pastor, if necessary.
- To record attendance by doing a count of all those in attendance. This is required on the clipboard inside the podium by the main doors.
- To assist with communion dismissal
General Responsibilities
- If you are unable to usher on assigned Sunday, try and find a replacement from the list of ushers. If unable to find a replacement, contact the church office (920) 822-3511
Pre-Service Checklist:
- Ushers should arrive at least 15-20 minutes prior to the beginning of the worship service.
Have one usher stationed at the entrance to the sanctuary to hand out bulletins 15 minutes prior to the service.
- Greet everyone as you hand out bulletins.
- If needed encourage people to be seated, so service can start on time.
DURING THE SERVICE
Offering
- Come forward up the center aisle to the bottom step, to receive the offering plates. After collecting offering, return to the front step handing the plates Pastor, then return to your seat.
Recording Attendance
- It is recommended that attendance be counted about 5-10 minutes after service starts this way we catch any late arrivers. Record attendance on the paper on the clipboard in the podium by the main doors.
Holy Communion
- You can either use one or two ushers for communion. Either way, please dismiss members to come forward for communion 10 at a time per side (Lectern & Pulpit) to have a full table of 20.
Close / End of worship Service
- During the last hymn, open the Sanctuary doors if they were closed.
- Following the service, please dismiss congregation after pastor has exited to the Narthex. Head to the front row and dismiss people as needed. Please pick up any bulletins or wastepaper, or trash left behind in the pews.
- Fellowship Pads – on Wednesday after service draw a line under the last name signed into the fellowship pad. This mark enables the church secretary to know the difference between those who attended Wednesday verses Sunday. On Sunday, please pull the sheets out of the fellowship pad and place in church mailbox #322 for the church secretary.
Emergency Procedures
- In case of illness, assist person as needed, notify the Elder on duty as well.
- In case of Fire, assist in leading the congregation outside through front and side doors and away from building.
- Should you be required to call 911 – advised 911 of your emergency and provide address of church: 910 S. St. Augustine St. The call back number is (920) 822-3511 or use your cell phone number if you used your cell phone. One of the ushers should be position outside to direct arriving emergency personnel.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- The AED is located in the cabinet next to the main office. Only those certified should operate the AED. (AED & CPR Training will be provided to all who desire).
