Realms of Inquiry
Statement of Understanding Concerning Drug Use and Other Prohibited Activities
I understand Realms of Inquiry Private School ("Realms") prohibits certain activities that are contrary to Realms' philosophy and that are likely to negatively affect the educational environment and the safety and well-being of students. This includes prohibited activities that occur while on Realms property, during all Realms activities whether on or off campus, and 24/7 during overnight trips.
If the Head of School reasonably believes the health, safety, or well-being of any student, teacher or staff member is threatened by a suspected prohibited activity, the Head of School may immediately place the involved student on Home School status. Home School status is not intended to indicate any level of guilt or innocence; it is merely designed to protect all students while a thorough investigation is conducted. While on Home School status, Realms faculty will provide the student with the appropriate schoolwork necessary to maintain the student's academic standing.
I. Prohibitied Acts
A. Drugs, Alcohol, and Other Substances.
1. Realms prohibits the possession and use of alcohol, tobacco, controlled substances, and drugs by any student unless the student is taking: (i) a drug in accordance with the instructions on a lawful order of a health care practitioner for the student; or (ii) a non-prescription drug in accordance with the instructions on the package.
2.Realms prohibits students from selling, giving away, otherwise distributing, or receiving alcohol, tobacco, controlled substances, or drugs.
3. In the event that one or more students are present when other students are engaged in the use of alcohol, controlled substances, or nonprescription drugs, Realms expects those students to be helpful in the process of determining their non-involvement, e.g. to be willing to be drug tested, and/or to choose to remove themselves from the situation.
4. Refusal to take a drug test requested by the Head of School or by the Head of School's designee will be deemed a positive drug test.
B. Other Prohibited Acts. Realms prohibits other activities that negatively affect the educational environment and the safety and well-being of students including, but not limited to, vandalism; cheating; making false accusations or otherwise lying; theft; vulgar or crude language and behavior; sexual harassment; illegal acts; and placing one's self or others at unnecessary risk of physical, psychological, or emotional harm.
C. Realms Impact. The foregoing acts are prohibited if they affect any student's performance or the school environment in any way, including encouraging or helping other students to participate, damaging the school's reputation, hurting academic performance or relationships with students or staff at school, bringing the topic into the school culture through talk.
II. Review Council and Sanctions. Realms may convene a Review Council upon suspicion that a student engages in any prohibited act described in Paragraph I(A If the suspected prohibited act involves acts described in Paragraph I(B), the Head of School has discretion whether to convene a Review Council or to address the suspected behavior as appropriate under the circumstances.
A. The Review Council will be convened and chaired by the Head of School or the Head of School's designee. The Review Council shall consist of at least the Head of School (or designee) and two other members of the Realms' staff. The Head of School may choose other individuals to participate on the Review Council as deemed necessary and appropriate by the Head of School. If the activity in question does not involve illegal actions, one member of the Review Council may be selected by the student accused of prohibited activity.
B. The student who is being accused of prohibited acts and the student's parents or legal
