• Remote Work Strategy

  • Text in blue will not appear in the final document.

Data in the following fields will populate a PDF document that you will be able to download and use as required. We recommend filling all sections and adding further specific examples when relevant (in drop down sections). Each section will be preceded by a brief explanation of it's content and will end with space for additional notes.

For help completing the document feel free to reach out via the contact us page on constellationteams.com.au

You can save your progress and finish completing the form at another time by clicking the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

  • This document may serve as a tool to assess whether it is suitable for an employee to work within a remote environment, considering how it may affect multiple aspects of their role. It can also be used to identify areas within which a current remote workplace may be improved. For guidance during the assessment phase or assistance implementing healthy remote work practices, Constellation remote advisers are available to help.

  • Key Actions & Responsibilities

  • Definition of Role

To begin developing a strategy for working remotely the range of responsibilities of a particular role must bedefined as accurately as possible. This description exists as a snapshot of the current state of affairs, not as an ideal expression of the role.

  • The below fields help to give a summary of your role within the organisation. There will be opportunities to elaborate further if you like later in the form.

A shared understanding of your role is essential for planning any changes to your work environment. You may want to consider the personnel that you'll be sharing the document with and whether they will collaborate on its implementation.

  • Individual Preferences

Select as many as apply in each category.

  • Definition of Key Actions

These tasks listed below contribute to day-to-day activities of the role as listed above. These definitions do not stipulate how the tasks are accomplished, but state what the end result of each action is.

  • Below, add the main tasks that you regularly complete in the course of your role. This may include a subset of smaller actions that come together to complete a larger task or addresss particular issues.

Over the next few sections we will be communicating how you will be able to complete these tasks in different environments, such as remote work.

One of the fields below requires an assessment of a task's visibility. Remote work can have the effect of making the work that you do less visible, increasing the importance of agreement on measuring quality and quality of work, which is addressed later in this form.

    • Add Task C
    • Add Task D
    • Add Task E

    • Define Key Deliverables & How to Measure Them

Productivity should be considered as to how it relates to each of these individual tasks, and subsequently, the sum of them together as a whole. The method for measuring productivity should be agreed upon between the employee and management and reviewed periodically.

    • This section of the form may require that you collaborate with your employer/manager to discuss the best way to measure these tasks but we recommend that you start this process by sharing your perspective and then building on that foundation.

If no agreement or official measurement is in place, use your judgement to suggest how that may work.

    • Task B
    • Task C
    • Task D
    • Task E
    • End Section Collapse 2
    • Task Specific Remote Suitability

Individual tasks within an employee's role can vary in their suitability in a remote environment. Consider each separately so that a complete picture can be built from the sum of these parts. Remote Suitability: (Native, Mixed, Unfit) Asynchronous Suitability: (Native, Mixed, Unfit)

    • If you have spent some time working in this role remotely, use your experience to inform your answers below. If you have experienced any difficulties and have solutions to offer, briefly summarise them here.

The term "asynchronous", as used below, refers to how important it is to be doing the task at a particular time or with other colleagues simultaneously.

A task's remote or asynchronous suitablity should not neccesarily be assessed based on current working arrangements, and some tasks may be remote or asynchronous-suitable after certain systems and practices are implemented. Constellation may be able to help advise in these scenarios.

    • Task C
    • Task D

    • Team Dynamics

    • Time Disparity

If applicable, consider the difference in standard working hours between colleagues if one or more people work in separate locations or must complete their work at alternate times. If the standard work day is separated such that neither is usually working at the same time, some extra accommodations may need to be made.

    • If you are proposing an alternative work arrangement to your employer, share your planned changes here, and use this as an opportunity to set boundaries for when you will be open to working outside of this arrangement, if applicable.

    • Colleague Interactions

How may a change to or continuation of remote work affect the colleagues that are regularly in communication with the employee throughout the course of their duties? Consider the nature of this relationship, what information each requires from the other and the regularity of contact that is neccessary.

    • Don't feel obliged to list all of your colleagues in this section, but try to identify who you spend the most time interacting with professionally.

When writing a strategy for communicating with this colleague, you may want to include your understanding of their preferences, i.e. video call, email, etc. Consider if you will be working remotely and they will not, or vice-versa, and how that would affect your ability to communicate or collaborate.

    • Add Second Colleague
    • Add Third Colleague
    • Add Fourth Colleague
    • Add Fifth Colleague
    • Add Sixth Colleague

    • Personal Workflow

A principal driver of productivity within an organisation is the continuous flow of work through each department or team. In the same way, an individual's flow of work will be a significant factor for their own ability to be effective. Below, state the required elements in each area of your work.

    • This section provides a more long form opportunity to summarise how you will be able to complete your role effectively in a remote environment, incorporating some of the information you have laid out above.

One of the fields below, "Systems Building & Management" refers to any standardised practices that you can implement, either within your own work, or the way your team operates. Remote work is particularly difficult without clear systems in place, which may not have been neccessary while working in an office. If you have any insight into systems that should be implemented or improved, take this opportunity to share it.

    • Regular Remote Practices

Which behaviours can be utilised to maintain high functioning systems and good working relationships with colleagues? These may be personal or team based.

    • Consider which actions have proven useful in the past, and at how often they are useful. You may already be doing the actions listed below but at a rate that is too often, that it becomes a distraction from the core tasks listed above.

If these actions have been implemented without your input, consider the intention behind their inclusion. If you believe that outcome can or should be acheived at a different regularity, share that here.

    • Congratulations on completing your remote strategy proposal document!
