Read the following scenarios and decide which actions you would take if you were in a similar situation. Remember to please explain your answers. If you have any questions, you may contact your Integrated Case Worker or Social Worker.
Scenario #1: A few employees who speak a language other than English sometimes communicate with one another in that language in your workplace. Some employees think this is fine and none of their business. Other employees feel uncomfortable and left out when in the presence of these employees. What do you think? Does workplace etiquette demand all employees to speak in a language everyone can understand?

Scenario #2: John’s co-worker in the next cubicle has a habit of constantly clearing his throat, snorting and making other unpleasant sounds. John has tried to ignore this behavior, but finds it extremely distracting. Should John just work harder to ignore this behavior, counter-attack by making equally unpleasant noises, speak to the co-worker, or go directly to HR to complain?

Scenario #3: Your office has provided a spacious kitchen with a large refrigerator, a microwave, and a coffee maker. Most of the employees using this space are respectful of others by cleaning up after themselves, removing old food from the refrigerator, and making a new pot of coffee when the pot is empty. Unfortunately, a few employees are discourteous and careless. The behavior of this small group has led to resentment among their tidier co-workers and annoyance that everyone else has to pick up after them. What could be done to improve this situation?
Scenario #4: Soraya is really happy with her new job as a sales associate at a shoe store. Although her new company’s policy says that employees should not keep their cell phones with them during working hours, she notices that all the other sales associates do. They also check their messages and text while working. Soraya really likes her smartphone and is thinking of keeping it with her. She believes that it cannot be a problem since her co‐workers are doing it. You are a good friend, and Soraya has asked for your opinion about this situation. What would you do?
Scenario #5: Jane works as a cashier at a small grocery store. Her shift finishes at 3pm, but she cannot leave until her co‐worker, Melissa, takes over from her. Melissa is really nice and has been working at the grocery store for about 3 years, and Jane has been working there for the last 5 months. Recently, Melissa is showing up late for work without any explanation and because of it, Jane is not able to leave until 3:10pm. This really upsets Jane and as she has to rush to get to her computer classes. Melissa has never explained or apologized for being late. Help Jane to solve this situation.
