Now that you are familiar with lateral moves, complete the following worksheet . Your objective as an employer will be to promote an employee to a new management position based on his or her skillset. As you review each candidate’s employment history with the company, determine who is most qualified for the promotion.
Picture this: A manager at Macy’s department store is retiring. Consequently, the store has advertised within the company for a new manager. The requirements include knowledge of all departments, flexibility, adaptability, and the skills necessary to work with all team members. As a District Manager, you have received multiple applications, two of which are internal employees. Based on the following information regarding each candidate, who do you believe is best suited for the promotion?
Tom: Tom has worked in the shoe department at Macy’s for nine years. He has an excellent attendance record, is courteous to customers, and is detail-oriented. Tom has also received a promotion to a lead worker in the shoe department due to his consistent sales record. He has had a few disagreements with his co-workers, but works overtime when asked and without hesitation. Tom has demonstrated dependability for the past nine years and his department is always neat, clean and well organized.
Shelly: Shelly has worked at Macy’s for eight years. During her first two years of employment, she worked in the children’s department. Afterwards, a sudden turnover resulted in the need for someone to work in the household goods department. Although no salary increase was involved, Shelly happily volunteered to fill the vacancy and worked in the department for the following three years. She occasionally calls in sick, but no more than one or two times a year. Shelly has furthermore had the opportunity to work as a clerk in the seasonal department, where she is currently known for her excellent customer service and product knowledge. Best of all, Shelly has received Employee of the Month for the last two months.
