E-Reader Policy
Privately owned e-reader devices will be allowed at St. Patrick School.
Definition: E-book reader, also called an e-book device or e-reader, is a portable electronic device that is designed primarily for the purpose of reading digital books and periodicals. Examples of e-readers include Nook, Kindle, Kobo or Sony e-reader. Devices used to play games, watch videos, or access the Internet are not acceptable.
Liability: Students who bring a privately owned e-reader to school are personally responsible for the equipment. St. Patrick School assumes no responsibility for the loss of, theft of or damage to any personal device.
Requirements: Usage of these devices is a privilege, not a right, which requires that each user follow St. Patrick School’s Technology Policies. No privately owned student devices may be attached to the school’s network or Internet services. Students must register the e-reader device with the school office prior to usage in the building. The model and serial number will be recorded.
Classroom Use: Students must obtain teacher permission before using the device in class. Students must turn off and put away the device when requested by a teacher. Students may use the device before school, during study hall, and after school in adult supervised areas only, such as the media center or classrooms with a teacher present. No electronic devices are allowed in the lunchroom. School staff may examine a student’s personal e-reader device and search its contents at any time.
Violations: Examples of inappropriate use may include but are not limited to the following:
- accessing the internet
- playing games
- listening to music
- watching videos
- sending messages
- taking pictures
- making recordings
In the event a student violates the appropriate usage of an e-Reader device, the school may revoke the privilege of use.
The administration reserves the right to modify, change or revoke this policy at any time.
