I recommend that you buy more than one emu chick. A single chick can get easily lonely and die. Plus it helps recognise other emus as they mature. But if you just want a cool pet and have lots of time or other animals to accompany the chick, then one bird can work.

Females are the dominant sex in the emu world, and are choosy for their mate. So if you want to breed emus, get more males than females.
