The SOPHE Honorary Fellow award honors a non-member who has made significant and lasting contributions to the public’s health and health education. This individual receives a non-monetary award during SOPHE's Annual Conference ceremony and is usually invited to provide remarks during the conference (virtual or in person). In addition, the honoree is considered a lifetime non-voting member and receives all member benefits, with the exception of voting or running for SOPHE office.
Previous honorees during SOPHE’s 70-year history include luminaries such as U.S. Surgeon Generals Dr. C. Everett Koop and David Satcher; The Honorable John Lewis and John E. Porter; former DHHS Assistant Secretaries Drs. Michael McGinnis and Howard Koh; and former Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Presidents Drs. Stephen Schroeder and Risa Lavisso-Mourey. The SOPHE Executive Committee selects the Honorary Fellow awardee and invites National SOPHE members to submit any candidates to be considered for the 2022 award. Criteria to be considered includes:
