Important Changes to School Volunteering for the 2026–2027 School Year

Beginning in the 26/27 school year, California Senate Bill 848 (SB 848) establishes additional student-safety requirements that affect school volunteers. The requirements in SB 848 are intended to strengthen protections for students and ensure that adults working with children understand appropriate boundaries and their responsibilities for recognizing and reporting suspected child abuse or neglect.
Volunteers or a Guest?

According to SB 848, a volunteer is: a person over 18 years of age who interacts with pupils outside of the immediate supervision and control of the pupil’s parent or guardian or a school employee. Volunteers at CLS typically help within the classroom, chaperone on field trips, assist with tasks around the school, etc. Not all adults who come onto campus are volunteers, they may be guests. Guests are family members and/or family friends who are on campus during the student contact day and are under the immediate supervision of student parents/guardians and/or school employees. Guest will not have to follow volunteer requirements. Guests at CLS are typically present for: chapels, grandparent/vip day, performances, etc.

If you are requesting to be a volunteer on campus, both CLS and SB 848 require the following steps to be completed. This will need to be completed each year by every individual seeking to volunteer.

STEP 3: CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK

YES. By completing and submitting this form, I consent to having a criminal background check completed under my name by Christ Lutheran Church and School. You can expect an email after submission of this form with next steps on using Protect My Ministry as the vendor for this service. (If you do not consent, do not complete/submit this form. Please understand you will not be allowed to volunteer in school activities)
OPTIONAL - STEP 4 : CHAPERONE DRIVER CLEARANCE

All parents/guardians requesting to drive students for a field trip/athletic event must complete the Volunteer Driver and Chaperone Agreement form, submit a copy of their driver's license and their current vehicle liability insurance, and consent to a DMV motor vehicle report. By signing this form and submitting required documents, volunteers are consenting to have Christ Lutheran School run a DMV motor vehicle report. Drivers without a clean driving record may not be approved to be a chaperone for school events.
