Ayurveda and The Doshas
Ayurveda and The Doshas
According to Ayurvedic philosophy, universal life force manifests as three different energies, or doshas, known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. We’re all made up of a unique combination of these three forces. Though everyone has some of each, most people tend to have an abundance of one or two of the doshas. This unique combination is determined at the moment of conception and is your own personal blueprint, or Prakriti (nature). As you move through life, the proportion of each of the three doshas constantly fluctuates according to your environment, your diet, the seasons, the climate, your age, and many other factors. As they move into and out of balance, the doshas can affect your health, energy level, and general mood. The state of imbalance is known as your Vikriti, and can be brought back into balance by making adjustments in your daily routine, nutritional intake, and lifestyle choices.

Dosha Assessment
  • 1

This is a self-assessment for discovering which of the doshas is most prominent in you. While the most accurate way to find your dosha is to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner and have your pulse taken, this chart offers valuable insight. Not every selection will fit you perfectly, but choose the answer that relates to you the most. To discover your Vikriti, or your current state of balance, answer the questions with how you are and feel in the present moment (and roughly the past 6-12 months). To discover your Prakriti, or your baseline constitutional makeup, it is encouraged to take the assessment a second time, answering the questions as a reflection of how you have felt and been throughout your entire life. If you're unsure about any answer, make a decision based on your gut feeling.

If you're unsure, wrap your thumb and index finger around your wrist where you would normally wear a watch. If they overlap, you have a small frame. If they just touch, you have a medium frame, and if they do not touch you have a large frame.

Your Prakriti is you true nature, determined at conception and would hold true for how you've identified most of your life. Your Vikriti indicates any current state of imbalance to your nature and would be reflective of how you've felt over the past 6-12 months.
