  • GUIDELINES FOR BEHAVIOUR

    Please read the following guidelines very carefully and be sure you are clear on exactly what each article means before signing:
  • The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association is committed to providing an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect. Further, the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association supports equal opportunity and prohibits discriminatory practices.  Members are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a manner consistent with the values of the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association which include: fairness, integrity, open communication and mutual respect.  Conduct which violates these values may be subject to sanctions pursuant to the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association’s Discipline Policy.

    In addition to the above, the following specific behaviors will be subject to sanction pursuant to the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association’s Discipline Policy.

    1. The starting times for practice means “dressed and ready to begin”, not arrival time at the practice facility.
    2. Any infraction of training rules will be dealt with on an individual basis.  Players are expected to be health conscious in terms of diet and sleep.  Smoking is strictly forbidden.
    3. When a player has to miss practice (e.g. illness), the player must make every effort to inform the coaching staff before practice.  In the rare instance when this may not be possible, the players must explain the circumstances as soon as possible after missing the practice.
    4. Not complying with the by-laws, rules, regulations or policies of the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association, as adopted and amended from time to time;
    5. Verbally or physically abusing opponents, officials, spectators or sponsors; Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association personnel, team-mates, coaching staff, support staff, peers or volunteers;
    6. Showing disrespect to officials, including the use of foul language and obscene or offensive gestures;
    7. Abusing basketball facilities or equipment;
    8. Failing to comply with the conditions of entry in a Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association event including any rules with regard to clothing or advertising
    9. Failing to be available to meet reasonable requests for interviews by the media;
    10. Follow all rules and regulations outlined by the coaching staff and the NLBA.
    11. Leave coaching to coaches, ensuring not to publicly criticize coaches, strategies, playing time or performance.
    12. Respect and support the coaches, administrators, athletes, fans and officials at all times.
    13. Any other unreasonable conduct which brings the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association, its’ sponsors and /or  the sport of basketball into disrepute, including but not limited to, abusive use of alcohol, non-medical use of drugs, use of alcohol by minors.

    For the purposes of a discipline matter which is being dealt with under this policy, if there is any discrepancy between this Code of Conduct and the applicable Code of Conduct of any local/regional/provincial/territorial basketball association, this Code of Conduct and policy shall take precedence.
