The Office Residence Life is notified there is a possibility of bed bugs in a student space. Residence Life staff respond to the room to confirm the presence of bed bugs.
If confirmed (LIVE BUG FOUND, PROVIDED TO AND CONFIRMED BY FACILITIES) submit a work order online including the following information:
- Hall
- Room
- Confirmation of bed bugs
- Date and time student(s) will complete the treatment preparation list and vacate the room so treatment can begin.
- Attach photos of bugs (keep captured bug to provide to facilities department)
Advise the student(s) to do the following (GIVE CONFIRMED BED BUGS HANDOUT):
- Thoroughly clean the room removing all trash to the dumpster.
- Cautiously wash bedding, dirty clothes, and any other clothing items you wish to take with you.
- Drying for a minimum of 2 cycles of 90 minutes is required to kill any potential bugs or eggs.
- Transport bags to be disposed of immediately in dumpsters.
- Use new clean bags to transport treated items to take to temporary space. If this is not done, you risk spreading bed bugs.
- Personal clothing, bedding, and clutter can act as an insulating barrier to treatment.
- Please ensure all clothing is properly hung in the closet or folded in drawers.
- Bedding must be removed and heat treated as instructed above.
- Clutter needs to be removed and/or organized.
- Inspect and sanitize with disinfectant wipes any hard surface items they wish to take with you.
- Once inspected and sanitized immediately remove from the room.
- Any items that could be damaged during treatment process should be before removing using the processes listed above; RMC is not responsible for damaged items as a result of the treatment process.
- Take as few items as possible – our goal is to make sure not to cross-contaminate the temporary space.
- Once all items are treated contact 406-238-SAFE to be issued a temporary room.
- Infected room key(s) will be collected when temporary room key(s) are issued.
If not confirmed submit a work order for a 2nd evaluation from the facilities department. Information to include:
- Hall
- Room
- Need for 2nd review of space to determine if bed bugs are present
Contact information of residence life staff member to meet facilities staff member at the room for dual inspection
- If confirmed with 2nd inspection, submit a confirmed work order as outlined above.
If not confirmed with 2nd inspection advise the student(s) to do the following (GIVE NOT CONFIRMED BED BUGS HANDOUT)
- Thoroughly clean the room removing all trash to the dumpster.
- Cautiously wash bedding, dirty clothes, and any other clothing items not in dressers or wardrobes.
- Drying for a minimum of 2 cycles of 90 minutes is required to kill any potential bugs or eggs.
- Transport bags to be disposed of immediately in dumpsters.
- Use new clean bags to transport treated items back to the room. If this is not done, you risk spreading bugs.
- Personal clothing, bedding, and clutter can act as an insulating barrier to treatment.
- Please ensure all clothing is properly hung in the closet or folded in drawers.
- Bedding must be removed and heat treated as instructed above.
Clutter needs to be removed and/or organized.
- Inspect and sanitize with disinfectant wipes any hard surface items.
- Pull all furnishings from walls to allow treatment to be most effective.
Once completed contact 406-238-SAFE to notify staff the treatment process can begin.
Reassure student(s) that being messy doesn’t attract bed bugs but makes them difficult to find as it provides more hiding places. Advise the student(s) to contact 406-238-SAFE should they find bed bugs.
