Although there are only a few questions from each standard, you are advised to read all of the standards in their entirety.

If you have any questions about these standards, please make sure to ask during the Practice Sessions so they can be discussed. However, our focus during the practice sessions is on practicing the skills. We will devote a certain portion of the practice sessions to answering questions about the standards.

Students are expected to attend as many sessions as needed to practice the interpreting skills/protocols to prepare for the Oral Skils Performance Evaluation.

The interpreter is responsible for finding out the protocols for each organization in which they are interpreting, and follows those organizational protocols. For example, Hospital A's protocol is for freelance interpreters to report at the Language Services Department before interpreting for patients, while Hospital B's protocol is to introduce themselves to the nurse in charge of the patient before the interpreting encounter.

In cases of possible cultural misunderstanding, what is not recommended as the course of action for the interpreter.

According to the NCIHC Standards, page 2, there are 32 standards of practice grouped under nine headings. The headings show the relationship
of the standards to the nine ethical principles of the National Code of Ethics.

According to NCHIC, if there is no equivalent in the patient's language,
an interpreter may substitute simpler explanations for medical
terms a provider uses, so the patient would understand. 

The interpreter strives to understand the cultures associated with
the languages he or she interprets, including biomedical culture.
For example, an interpreter learns about the traditional remedies some
patients may use.

A professional medical interpreter should take a comprehensive course on diseases and medical conditions so he/she can answer questions that the patient may have.
