Brighter Futures Awards
The DBHIDS Division of Intellectual disAbility Services and its Public Awareness Committee invite you to submit a nomination for a community member or group who makes a difference in others' lives. Please help us celebrate by acknowledging those in the community who exemplify our motto: It's all about community. The Brighter Futures Awards are for individuals from all walks of life: neighbors, people with disabilities, teachers, friends, family, employers, co-workers, spiritual leaders, civic groups/organizations, self-advocates, medical professionals, political leaders, businessmen, and business women. We are looking for groups or individuals who are not employed by a provider agency who have made extraordinary efforts to assist people with an intellectual disability and or autism. SOCIAL: This person helps individuals with an intellectual disability and/or autism develop a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system. Consider those who can promote communication, particularly with those who may be non-verbal. (Examples: community group leaders, friends & companions)
SPRITUAL: This person helps individuals with an intellectual disability and/or autism connect to or with spiritual and faith choices. Supports the full inclusion into the faith experience to expand their sense of purpose and meaning in life. (Example: worship leaders, choirs, prayer & youth groups, shuttle drivers, meditation groups).
EMPLOYEMENT and CAREER DEVLOPEMENT: This person (employer or co-worker) helps individuals with an intellectual disability and/or autism experience satisfaction with their work and creates/provides enrichment at work in volunteer activities. Nominee promotes full pay and meaningful work. (Example: work colleagues, natural supports).
COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP: This person/team has demonstrated exemplary leadership skills and/or outcomes that support the needs of individuals with disabilities at the forefront related to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure an everyday life for all.
PHYSICAL: This person recognizes the need for and promotes wellness and well-being through recreation, nutrition/diet dental, and all physical health, holistic practices for individuals with an intellectual disability and/or autism. (Example: recreation leaders, wellness centers).
EDUCATIONAL and INTELLECTUAL: This person recognizes the abilities of individuals with an intellectual disability and/or autism and finds ways to expand their knowledge and skills. Promotes or provides opportunities to learn skills, take classes, and expand knowledge. (Example: teachers, tutors, mentors, parent advocates).
ENIRONMENTAL: This person makes a special effort to ensure that persons with intellectual disability and/or autism occupy pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being. (Example: sports coaches, interior design, gardeners, recycling, mural arts).
COMMUNICATIONS: This person assists members of the community and/or their organizations to support the communication needs of individuals with disabilities.
FINANCIAL: This person provides information for individuals with an intellectual disability and/or autism and works to help them understand and feel satisfied with their current and future financial situation and have greater control of their finances. (Example: Local banks, pro bono work, paralegals, financial training.)
CULTUTRAL and ARTS: This person assists with providing or promoting creative expression. Facilitates exposure to arts and other creative endeavors in the community relating to the arts and culture.
